Degrees – Majors - Minors

  • Certificates (yoga, massage, web design, vet assistant, real estate, etc.)
  • Associates
    • AS/AA - 2 years then transfer to 4 year with credits earned
    • AAS – 2 year degree that meets workforce requirements (Dental Hygienist, Air traffic controller)
  • Bachelors – 4 year degree
  • Double/Dual Degree – 2 degrees at the same time (Major/minor) - typically 5 years
  • Joint Degrees – Bachelors + Graduate/Professional degree is combined in less time
    • CUNY Sophie Davis Biomedical - BS + MD in 7 years
    • Juilliard School + Columbia University B of Arts at Columbia & M in Music at Juilliard in 5 years
  • Masters (MA) = 18 months - 2 years (MBA, MSW)
  • Doctorate (PHD) = 4-6 years Medicine, Law, Research, Collegiate teaching

Questions to ask colleges about double�degree options:

  • Are there additional fees for students getting double degrees?
  • Will getting a double degree affect scholarships, merit awards, or my date of graduation?
  • What are the logistics of getting a double degree if classes are held on two different campuses?
  • How many students successfully get double degrees at this school?
  • How easy/difficult is it to get into required classes if I enroll in a double degree program?
  • Are there students successfully getting double degrees with whom I can have a candid conversation?
  • Are there advisers available who focus on the needs and concerns of students getting double degrees?
  • Will getting a double degree allow enough time for required ensembles, bands, private lessons, and practicing and still leave time for having a life outside of school?

  • Public vs Private College - 2 & 4 Year degrees
    • For-Profit Colleges – Businesses offering degree programs – DO YOUR RESEARCH!!
  • Liberal Arts – Private, smaller in size, 4 year degrees
  • Universities – Public, larger in size, smaller colleges/conservatories within, MA & PHD programs
  • Community Colleges – affordable, smaller in size, help with transition/transfers
  • Voc. Tech & Career Colleges – Certificates & Associates, culinary arts, firefighting, cosmetology
  • Arts Colleges & Conservatories – offer degrees in fine arts – music, theatre, fashion, photography
  • Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HIS) – these schools offer programs, services and activities intended to support the students they serve.
