Prayer/Oración/Prière

Good Father, we praise you for the beauty of your creation: for the earth beneath our feet, for the sky that covers us here in Rome as it covers Gaza, Taybeh, Jerusalem, Beirut; for every human face that bears your mark, without exception. We thank you for sending your Son Jesus Christ, who on the cross broke down the wall of hostility, and every wall that human beings keep building between brothers and sisters. Send upon us, today, your Holy Spirit: grant us the grace to see clearly what we must do, and the strength to carry through, to the end, what we have seen. Through Christ our Lord. Amen

This is not a film, but a genocide /Esto no es una película sino un genocidio

  • What began as “Priests against Genocide" must become a universal refusal to accept the erasure of the Palestinian people, as described by B'Tselem — change is underway, this is not a film.
  • -At the Venice Film Festival premiere of "Naza," a 25-minute standing ovation signaled that Israeli society itself is awakening to the reality of the Gaza genocide (Gideon Levy, Haaretz). "IT IS ISRAEL'S KAIROS! THE TIME OF AWARENESS."
  • Expelled from Israel a year earlier for "endangering state security," had opened that same festival with the words: "This is not a film. It's a genocide."

“Peace through strength” (Israeli narrative): WAR is PEACE. A phrase long used by U.S. hawks of both parties. Reagan cemented it in Republican foreign policy, pairing his pledge with a vow never to compromise “our principles, our beliefs or our freedom,” and anchoring it in religious terms — turning “peace through strength” from a strategic maxim into a moral crusade.

  • Spanish society is broadly sympathetic to Palestinians (and the Saharawi people), reflected in daily life, political action, and Spain's 2024 recognition of the State of Palestine — though anti-immigrant sentiment (especially post-Ceuta) has grown, without this constituting anti-Semitism.
  • "Christian Zionism" is flagged as a serious emerging threat — a belief that hastening Israel's actions (including against Palestinians) will bring about the Second Coming — which is described as fueling Israeli policy in Gaza/the West Bank and requiring vigilance against its spread in European society and within the Church.

Fr Renato Colizzi, SJ – The stones and the pearl/Las piedras y la perla

  • The pilgrimage began as listening to the Word of God in the land where it took flesh — a first "stone" requiring careful reading to free it from the ideological manipulations often imposed on it.
  • Visiting the stones of the holy sites (the Temple Mount, Gethsemane, Golgotha, the Holy Sepulchre) brought the pilgrims to silence and adoration before the mute witnesses of these founding events of the faith.
  • Bowing before the "living stones" — those today suffering and resisting for their people, witnesses of nonviolence and hope — culminated in a Palestinian girl's gift of a pearl in a glass shell on the pilgrimage's last evening: the youngest stone becoming its most precious pearl, a discreet sign of God's passing.

  • A pilgrimage into the humanity and beauty of the Palestinian people — witnessing firsthand their “sumud” (steadfastness), and a dignity and love of life so strong that many repeated, "I do not hate."
  • Encounters with two patriarchs: Michel Sabah, emeritus patriarch, a living witness to faith and a lifelong defender of his people's rights; and Pierbattista Pizzaballa, current patriarch, a tireless man of dialogue and hope rooted in the Holy Land's Christian communities.
  • The signs of Palestine's tragedy: fear of dying without reason; God and religion used to justify colonial conquest; land, water, and access to services stripped away; and a physical and psychological exhaustion so deep that people say there is no time left.

  • Bible and archaeology: a pilgrimage built on essentiality and "living stones," weaving together interreligious dialogue, fraternity and prayer into a full experience of faith engaging all five senses, history, and encounter with the local reality.
  • Parish twinning: churches paired for mutual enrichment through creative initiatives offering real, informed support to Holy Land parishes — the group has been twinned with Zababdeh since 2012.
  • The Matrix "red pill": the stark gap between the documented reality of the genocide and the manufactured narratives that dominate public discourse reveals how supranational technocratic systems operate — built on our conformism, they have "hacked" and are reprogramming us; work is ongoing with small discussion groups, and a recommended reads (see next slide)

  • Coordination of the network – Member of the Committee of the Network of Priests Against Genocide, helps organize and lend the network's voice to various vigils and initiatives supporting the Palestinian people.
  • Participation in demonstrations – (e.g., demanding the release of Dr. Abu Safyia and protesting against a proposed antisemitism bill which dangerously conflates antisemitism with anti-Zionism). Represented the network in ecumenical events (e.g. International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is observed 29 November 2025).
  • Act of public faith – Standing with the Palestinian people is not separate from his faith but a concrete expression of it: he sees Christ continuing to be crucified in the suffering of the Palestinian people, and believes the Gospel calls them to stand under that cross rather than look away. This has led to a “rapprochement” between priests and lay organizations who invite priests to speak and co-implement events.

  • Risk of "compassion fatigue" from daily donation/appeal requests — even among Catholic priests, indifference is spreading globally.
  • To address this: organize public events and concerts, publish articles in mainstream media.
  • Rallying priests around Gaza & Taybeh: birthplace of the Incarnation, last Christian village in the West Bank, and a stand against fundamentalist rhetoric and rising authoritarianism (Trump, Netanyahu).
  • New initiative: a song and video for Taybeh, to be shared after the Sept 22 (2026) Rome demonstration.

  • Fr General Arturo Sosa, though unable to attend, sends his support; his own visit to the Holy Land last November — including a moving encounter with Palestinian students in Bethlehem — led him to call the Society of Jesus to a serious, continuous commitment to justice and reconciliation there
  • What defines this group is seriousness, continuity and perseverance: staying vigilant, critical and hopeful, rather than a single isolated gesture, is the priests' primary role.
  • As priests, indignation and denunciation are not enough; the deeper call is to open hearts with humility and patience, moving beyond condemnation toward reconciliation and forgiveness.
