Write a Structured Response!

  • Clearly label each lettered section
  • If a labeled section asks you to compare/explain/describe more than one characteristic, clearly differentiate between them.
  • It is a good idea to drop down to the next line when moving on to a new characteristic.
    • Use transitions
      • My first reason is… Or One reason is…
      • My second reason… Another reason is…
  • Use ESPeN
    • If your first example is a economic, then use a political characteristic for your next example
    • However, closely read the question… if it only asks for economic reasons, then that is all you should include

  • Closely read the question and make sure you are answering each component of the question in order, and in an organized fashion
  • If a question is separated into parts (A, B, C, etc.) students should supply a separate response for each part.
    • Clearly label each part of the question
  • Use phrases/vocabulary/ terminology used in the course
  • Apply it to the concept of the question
  • Be as descriptive as possible
  • Link information in the stimulus (Map, Graph, etc.) to specific content learned in the course

Dos Continued

  • You need to know your regions, often times you will be provided a region and asked to answer a question about a country in that region.
  • Provide an example (real example is best, hypothetical is okay too if you don’t have a real one)
  • Underline key elements of your answer
  • Follow the guidelines in your FRQ checklist

Don'ts

  • Don’t use a passive voice… be confident.
  • No bullets or outlined lists
    • This is a written response
    • Bulleted lists will not be scored and result in a 0
  • Use acronyms without an explanation
    • Acronyms & abbreviations are not universal
  • Students should only provide information needed to answer the question
    • Do not include unnecessary information (We all know what this is called, don’t do it! It wont work!)
