Police Brutality

By: Setheion Johnson & Antoine Maiden

OVERVIEW

Police Brutality is the excessive use of force by officers on citizens. Among the African American community in the U.S, police brutality has become one of the most prominent issues to date.

We hope to bring reform to the type of training given to these officers while also creating a safe space for victims of these traumatic event to grow and heal from their victimization .

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Police brutality is a major problem and especially harms the African American community.

Police brutality on the Black community includes violent verbal and physical interactions based on race.

Improper training and lack of accountability has led to this issue being magnified.

OBJECTIVES

  • Amend existing policy to provide better police training/advanced classes.
  • Help change officers’ perspective of the African American community.
  • Create a safe space for victims to cope and heal from these traumatic events.

PROPOSED SOLUTION

  • Better program development and training for police interaction
  • All Chief of Police should have more advanced academy training for new officers
  • Officers should have more policies to stop them from violent action against civilians

SPECIAL THANKS

  • An estimated 250,000 civilian injuries are caused by law enforcement officers annually.

  • Also in one year, more than 50 million people in the U.S. have contact with police during a traffic stop, street stop, arrest, traffic accident or resident initiated contact.

  • A total 432 civilians having been fatally shot, 53 of whom were Black, as of June 1, 2023

  • Governments enacting hard on crime policies, poor police training, and lack of legal repercussions for officers who use excessive force against civilians help promote police brutality.
