Civil rights
Civil rights is the rights of people that make them feel like there apart of something Like MLK said we will once hold hand together

Civil Rights are rights of all people to be equal, political and social freedom.
In 1960 the civil rights era began in America, in which the African Americans did not have the same common rights whites had. Under the GOD, they are equal but still separated by the government. During this period many leaders from within the African American community and others rose to protect their community during the Civil Rights era, including Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, and rest of all as well.
All African-Americans with and without property had not ever been accorded full and fair citizenship rights in the American Republic, civil rights movements, or "freedom struggles," which have been a most common feature of the nation's history.
The March and Washington was an example of civil rights. Also when whites and blacks had to go to separate bathrooms, restaurants, water fountains, and so many other things. As well as Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream Speech”(below left).

Segregation
Definition- The placing of someone or something apart from everything else including other people. Basically being set apart.
Ruby Bridges was the first African American girl to attend an all white school she helped start the desegregation of schools
History of segregation- Segregation has always been a lurking force of unjust inhuman hatred. The hatred of others because they aren’t you. This has been happening and still happens to everyone not just African Americans. People like you and me Americans. People segregate bathrooms and other known public areas. There are lots of different kinds of segregation the most common area racial and religious beliefs. This pushes humanity apart from each other instead of bringing them closer. During the civil rights movement the south was quite a lot worse than the northern part of the United States. The north had very little if none of this vulgar attitude towards others.
Definition- A public protest, or rally against a political matter such as the peaceful protest Martin Luther King Jr.

How is this related to the Civil Rights Movement?
There were many demonstrations such as one on a Montgomery bus for bus rights and freedom of choosing where African Americans want to sit.. There were demonstrations for the Board of Education, bus rights, and for rides.
This was a key to the Civil Rights movement because it was one of the most commonly used peaceful protests. These demonstrations , and the other peaceful protests were the reason that African American got their freedom.

Marches March on Washington
During the Civil Rights Movement, there were many marches that took place to demonstrate that segregation was wrong and that black people deserved to be treated and have the same rights as white people. During the Civil Rights Movement, marches for freedom and rights played a big role. For example, the March on Washington in August of 1963 when some 250,000 people attended the largest demonstration in the nation’s capital for jobs and freedom. Or like in March 1965, the Selma-to-Montgomery March took place when people marched from Selma, Alabama to Montgomery, Alabama to demonstrate that black people should have the right to vote.

Sit-ins
A type of protest where people stay in an area that is segregated, to protest unjust racial treatment
The students walked into the restaurant and asked to be served, when the employee said no since they were black, they prepared themselves to sit-in and stay there to protest.

On February 1, 1960, 4 students went into a store and bought some school supplies, then they went to a segregated counter and asked to be served. Even though they were told to leave they stayed right where they were until the store closed and they were forced to leave. Many other students then did the same thing, groups were assigned to do it at different places and by February 7, there were 54 sit-ins, in 15 cities, throughout 9 states.
Discrimination
Definition: Discrimination is when people are treated badly because they are different. Most of the time, it is because they are colored, but discrimination applies to anything that makes you different.
Sentence: The Civil Rights Movement was led by blacks, who were fighting to end discrimination.
Examples: Discrimination is what led to the Civil Rights Movement. The africans wanted more rights, so they decided to fight for them with the Civil Rights Movement. The Civil Rights Movement ended discrimination.
Prejudice
Definition:Prejudice is different opinions, feelings, or attitudes that are unfavorable against different groups of people such as racial, religious, or national groups.
Examples:Some examples of prejudice are when Rosa Parks was arrested because she refused to move her seat on the bus.It shows Prejudice because the blacks had to sit in the back of the bus. Another example of prejudice is that women fought to work and do things that men could do that women couldn’t do.
Sentence:Kathy was prejudice or had a strong, unfavorable opinion about jewish people, she would not talk or hang out with them.
Nonviolent
Definition- Peacefully resistant to any cause of injustice
Examples- 1) When Rosa Parks stood up for what's right when someone told her that she couldn’t sit where she was sitting and she fought without any violence by saying “NO!”
2) When Martin Luther King, Jr. lead a peaceful protest against segregation by telling a peaceful speech.
3) When Gandhi lead a peaceful protest called the Salt March.

Civil Disobedience
More than 50 protesters sit in the road before being arrested.
Civil Disobedience is the refusal to follow laws, pay taxes and fines, it is also a peaceful protest.

Reconstruction
Reconstruction- The victory of the union in 1865 had given some 4 million slaves their freedom, but it also marked a new era for lot’s of change and challenge. Although slaves were given freedom, there were still laws created to “keep them in their place” in society. These laws were called black codes and were used to control and regulate the work and needs of former slaves.
Jim Crow Laws
Jim Crow Laws- they are segregation laws enacted between 1876 and 1965 in the United States.
Jim Crow Laws were the laws that separated African Americans from whites with schools, restaurants,water fountains, restrooms, and many more.
Examples: African Americans were not allowed to go to school with the whites. They were not allowed to use the same bathrooms. The Jim Crow Laws were the laws that didn’t allow African Americans to vote.
Equality
Equality is when everyone is equal; a state of acceptance when people are in perfect harmony

Desegregation
Desegregation- When laws that separated different races were eliminated. (putting an end to segregation)
As a result of desegregation, some public schools allowed different races to join them.
In 1954, the Brown v. Board of Education case was decided when the U.S.A. Supreme Court confirmed that racial segregation in public schools was unfair. This lead to the desegregation of other areas in the U.S.A.
In 1957, the Little Rock High School Desegregation Crisis lead to the desegregation of other public schools in the U.S.A. Nine African-American students attended the (previously) all-white school, and their determination helped to desegregate other public schools.
Protest
A protest is a way of showing disapproval or objection to something in particular. Martin Luther King Jr. led protests during the Montgomery bus movement after Rosa Parks got arrested. His protests were nonviolent and part of his protests were by boycotting. There’s different kinds of protests. Two are Direct action and the other is Passive action. Direct action is Sit-Ins, strikes, boycotts, etc. Passive action is petitions, distributing flyers, soap-boxing, etc.
Integration
Definition - Combining and treating different racial, religious, or
ethnic groups, equally or a person in one of the specified groups with another.
Sentence - “Integration, happened during the Civil Rights era,” Mr. Ricardo our Social Studies teacher explained, it’s the act of combining different racial, religious, or ethnic groups, though in this case, it would be racial, combining the blacks with whites.”

Racism
Racism definition-the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race.
Sentence- "Racism springs from the lie that certain human beings are less than fully human. It's a self-centered falsehood that corrupts our minds into believing we are right to treat others as we would not want to be treated,- Alveda King
Examples- Racism is bad because rosa parks got arrested for nothing just white people being racist. 2nd example- Martin luther king jr was fighting to end segregation/ racism and it wasn't right to blacks and other races.-by joshua
Assassinated
Definition-A surprise attack or murder for religious beliefs,political and ect.
Sentence-Many leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and John F.Kennedy were assassinated or surprised attacked and murdered because of their religious beliefs or political. Many important leaders were assassinated in the Civil Rights.
Example-Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated because of his religious beliefs and some people did not like what Martin was thinking so they assassinated him in 1968.
Example-John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963 because of political and ect. If he was assassinated in dallas then that means that someone in dallas did not like him because of something.
Apartheid
Definition: When Black people and other people from other racial groups do not get the same rights as white people and they also had to live separately.
Sentence: When South Africa had apartheid every single black or other racial that wasn’t white was sent to live differently with almost no rights and had to be in separate homes from the white people. They really couldn't do what they wanted.
Examples: In 1949 Black people were not allowed to to marry white people.
In 1953 Black people could not go on strike.
1950 Black people were separated into racial groups same with other racial people.
1951 Black people could not vote.
NAACP
(A.K.A) National Association for the advancement of Colored People
The NAACP is an African-American civil rights organization in the United States. It was formed in 1909 by Ida B Wells, W.E.B Du Bois, Archibald Grimke, Oswald Garrison Villard, Lillian Wald, Mary White Ovington, William English Walling, and Henry Moskowitz. They were led by W.E.B. Du Bois. The NAACP was and is still a great civil rights organization for African Americans. It was also very affective and helped alot in the Civile Rights Movement.
Ku Klux Klan
The Ku Klux Klan (KKK) were a group of extremists formed in 1866. They were extremely racist. They believed in white dominance, and that no one else should have civil rights. Through acts of violence, they scared and terrorized African Americans, and the people who believed in equal rights.

Sentence: The Ku Klux Klan were horribly racist and were very cruel to people who were not white and also some white people who supported equal rights as well.
Social Justice
definition: Social Justice implies or means fairness to all people.It means that we need to help each other,and also implies that we all should have equal chances to succed in life. Quote- Injustice anywhere is a threat to Justice everywhere. Sentence: It is important to understand the equality and fairness of social justice.Ex.I believe that social justice is very important in this world and should always be because it is only fair and right that we are all treated equally.

Civil Rights Act
Civil Rights Act: An act of creating equal rights for everyone.
History involving Civil Rights Acts: In 1964, President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act. The document basically says everyone should treat everyone equally, meaning that everyone be able to vote and
have the same rights as everyone else.
Sentence: A Civil Rights Act can teach us to be equal
to everyone around us, no matter what they look like,
we are all people.
Boycott
Boycott- a type of protest in which the protesters abstain from buying goods or products from a business, store, or government to slow down its economic progress
Four days after Rosa Parks took her stand on a bus, African Americans began to boycott the Montgomery city bus system and refused to ride any of the buses.
Boycotting has been used as an effective way of protest for years. An example of this is when the American colonists in the 1700s boycotted the British’s products to protest against high taxes. The one example of a boycott act during the Civil Rights Movement is the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
African National Congress
Definition-
The definition of A.N.C. is a political party, founded in 1912 as an African nationalist movement and banned there from 1960 to 1990 because of its active opposition to apartheid: in 1994 won South Africa's first multiracial elections. Some history is that this group goes back when African Americans fought spear in hand for freedom. Nelson Mandela was a part of this group. In this group he lead a battle against apartheid to victory after his nearly three centuries behind bars.
Sentence-
The A.NC is a group that helps African Americans to get equal rights.
Example-
Nelson Mandela was a leader who fought for equal rights apart of this society even behind bar for about thirty years. He eventually managed to encourage others to fight for the same cause as well and got freed when he was supposed to stay in jail for the rest of his life.
