How to use it
These slides are not exhaustive, this is a collection of tools, sites and resources that can support home learning for whatever reason, be it school closure or family holidays. Some of the tools require more preparation than others and this is reflected by a key at the top right-hand corner of each slide.
More tools will continue to be added as I become more familiar with them and/or gain more information on what’s helpful.
On the next slides are menus, one by grade span and then by resource.
Finally, the these apps recommendations are geared to using them with students out of school, most can be used in school too with excellent effect.

Not as many books as Epic - but a free resource with age appropriate and familiar books available 24/7. No activity tracking.

Rivet is a free 24/7 library and reading practice app. In addition to hearing text, students read aloud and get feedback on their accuracy.

Tips:
Link Zearn’s website to your “Shared with Students” Clever page. You can edit the Clever link to display your class code. Or, send a note to parents with the information.
I recommend customizing students’ usernames and password. Here’s one suggestion:
Once logged in, students simply need to learn the basic icons used to start or proceed through their activities.
I will try to provide a navigational cheat sheet or video for students shortly. Aside from this, very little support is needed at home.

Tips:
This is a wonderful way to provide read alouds in Spanish and English.
The recommendation is daily use, for as much time as possible.
Simple student access to books requires no additional set up - just let students run with it.
One more suggestion: Assign books and/or collections to your students. You can assign to whole class or specific students/groups. You can also create customized quizzes for books, or assign books that already have quizzes.

Epic! Books: Students must be added to their teacher’s class and provided the class code to login. See notes below (or in sidebar) regarding access. Also note that I have not heard of students’ inability to access Epic! from home from 6AM - 4PM.

OxfordOwl has about 100 early reading books available for free, 24/7. There is no accountability for tracking students’ activities.

Send families the class login information in a letter, or edit the Clever link to display the class name.

Rivet is a free 24/7 digital library and reading practice app. In addition to hearing text read aloud, students practice reading aloud themselves and receive feedback on their accuracy. Teachers cannot manage their students’ activities remotely. Parents can view their child’s activities when their child is logged in.

Tips:
The full version of Rivet is only available in the Chrome app used in our Chromebooks. (The browser website linked above has only limited functionality.) Students login via Clever.
Practice using the app in class if possible. Students need support in understanding how to activate the read aloud and recording features. (There are videos of students using the app in the slidedeck as well.)
Send guidance to families for what book level is appropriate for their child.

You need to roster your students. There’s nothing else you need to do aside from monitoring your students’ progress.
The recommendation is 20 minutes, daily.

Tips:
You can upload documents, videos and photos all within Flipgrid.
When students upload a video, you can immediately respond with your own video response
Allow them to be creative with their selfie at the end, but keep videos on point.
You don’t need to show your face on Flipgrid, use the whiteboard tool.
Share the code for your class - not the topic. They can find the topic they need and then you can use it for future new topics.
Create your account using district email.
Login: Students need your class Flipcode and proceed with their district email account.

Spelling and Vocabulary City contains spelling, vocabulary, and phonics activities. Teachers monitor student progress.

Khan Academy is a free resource with tons of tutorial videos and exercises, primarily for math. Grammar study is decent as well.

Sora is a free resource that contains thousands of ebooks and audiobooks. Through Sora, books are available 24/7.

The easy way to communicate with video to your class. They can post videos and you can reply and vice-versa.. Works on ANY device. Great for foreign languages
Quizizz
This is a fantastic and fun way to assess students without needing them to be present. Plus it is very similar to Kahoot, which kids love.
The secret here is that to get a better score, kids will do the quiz again and again and again.

Edpuzzle
Found a great video but want to make sure they watch it fully? Use Edpuzzle to insert mandatory questions in the video to check for understanding - linked to google classroom and with immediate feedback for teachers and students
Flashcard site built with some little games to help with memorisation, good for definitions, concepts, languages and maths. Extensive examples already on the site
YouTube
Okay so there is a chance of going off topic, but have you ever used your teacher account to create a custom playlist of videos? You can then share the playlist for the kids to watch through. Like examples of backstage shows, or science videos about how circuits work, then get feedback from them with Flipgrid!

Lots of ways they can create interesting books, comic books, tutorial books etc.
You can easily upload a book and share it to Seesaw
You are able to see their work in real time, and then you can give feedback by typing on the page they are viewing
Students can collaborate with each other too without having to be next to each other
Include videos of themselves, pictures of work they have done etc..
You can have up to 30 books free - you can combine old work into one book too tofree up space.

Quizizz is a fun quiz tool similar to Kahoot but without the need for live play.

Tips:
Search for content before creating your own, often a quiz already exists that is similar to yours.
Quizizz integrates with google classroom so you can assign it to a class in a few clicks.
Students will generally try and beat their score and repeat the quiz
Advanced options include removing timers and changing how points are scored.

Allow collaboration on documents to see how they get on working in an online setting.

Tips:
The site has lots of great content already - but it is really easy to create your own too.
Use almost any video off youtube.
Give multiple choice and free choice questions for children to respond to.
A great question is simply.. What did the video just explain?
Data is linked to Google Classroom, easy to mark and praise success.
Great for languages.

Have them watch a few videos and then reflect on what they’ve seen by posting a Flipgrid on their thoughts.
Playlists can be linked to with one link.
Try a google form or a quizizz straight after - did anyone pay attention?
You can collaborate on playlists with other teachers - create a collection together

Quizlet is a brilliant flashcard site that generates simple activities to help with retrieval practice. Super for languages and fact heavy units of learning

Tips:
Check first before creating anything - there is probably a similar one somewhere that you can adapt your activity from.
Quizlet Live is amazing but will not work for home learning so don’t use the LIVE function.
Set them a challenge to take a screenshot of a finished activity and then seesaw / google classroom their final scores.

You can find articles and send them directly to Google Classroom for students to start their research.
This is more reliable than Wikipedia. Talk to your students about why that is.

This video helps learn the basics - setting up a classroom - adding students and setting assignments
Don’t set any work in the class stream, set it as an assignment.
Set due dates - it makes the classroom clear and organised and helps students, particularly in secondary.
Reuse posts across different classrooms.
