Curriculum and Instruction (Slide 1)

  • Mathematics
    • Summer work for elementary math to include narrowing to two to three core resources to pilot in the Fall and identify curriculum for non-piloting teachers
    • Summer professional learning for teachers focused on instructional approaches to support students’ conceptual and skill (CCSS) development
    • Expand parent communication methods related to math curriculum and instruction
  • Literacy
    • Summer professional learning for teachers focused on instructional approaches to support phonics instruction, comprehension, learning progressions, and learning experience planning
    • Review materials to support grammar and word study instruction at grades 6-8. Conduct trials and gather feedback.
    • Support teachers in the implementation of new 2nd Grade Units of Study in Phonics resource
    • Expand use of the data from reading & writing common assessments

    • Elementary Math Sub-committee has developed evaluation criteria and is reviewing and evaluating core and supplemental resources to pilot in the Fall
    • JH Math Sub-committee work includes refining scope and sequence with alignment to resources
    • Developed new common math assessments in grades 2-8 that simulate standardized assessments
    • Implemented Bridges Intervention and Numeracy Framework to support math intervention
  • Literacy
    • Jr. High Literacy Committee formed, and working on identified priorities (scope and sequence, workshop launches, rubrics, grammar, vocabulary, book selection)
    • Elementary- new phonics resource implemented at primary grades K-1, and for some K-3 students with reading disabilities
    • Implemented new common reading assessments in grades 3-8 that simulate standardized assessments

  • Science/Social Science
    • Form a K-8 Science curriculum review committee starting in fall of 2019
    • Identify a leader to facilitate the science curriculum review process
    • Create a scope and sequence of the critical social science skills for 6-8 social science
    • Revise and enhance elementary science and social science learning experiences in preparation for 2019-2020 school year
  • Language Acquisition
    • Implementation of recommendations of the Content Allocation Committee
    • Rollout of Dual Language Parent Handbook
    • Continue to address themes in feedback from Dual Language discussion groups
    • Expand the menu of options for Dual Language student integration options and work with each school to outline a plan

    • Jr. High Science subcommittee has identified needs and priorities and developed a timeline for K-8 science curriculum review
    • Jr. High Social Science subcommittee has identified needs and priorities and is looking at supplemental resources to expand availability of social science text materials and to focus on skills
  • Language Acquisition
    • Content Allocation Committee formed to evaluate and adjust the content allocation based on staff feedback
    • Developed new videos and parent handbook for dual language
    • Ongoing additions of language acquisition elements to curriculum
    • Researching primary Spanish phonics program to complement the new English phonics program

  • Form an Intervention Committee to strengthen the Tier 2 intervention and implementation process, address dual language considerations, and clarify structures specific to Tier 2 math at the elementary and junior high level
  • Continue to research additional research-based resources for Tier 3 instruction (individualized intervention)
  • Expand MTSS process to include planning for enrichment and acceleration needs
  • Provide structure for common assessment review and discussion within MTSS grade level meetings
  • Increase district team review of benchmark data in order to differentiate district support provided to buildings

Current Actions

  • Synergy teams review their benchmark data and plan for areas of improvement
  • Grade level teams review student data and plan for student instruction/interventions at MTSS meetings every 4 weeks.
  • Continuums of support and intervention are used for math, literacy, and behavior intervention planning (multiple tier 2 options)
  • Evaluation of intervention progress (progress monitoring) occurs every 6-8 weeks
  • Tier 3 problem-solving occurs as needed
  • Parent communication letters and procedures for intervention
  • District studies benchmark data to identify priority pockets to provide targeted support (professional learning, resources, etc.)

  • Suggest including an Assessment Objective in the Strategic Plan
  • Facilitate a process that results in outlining/updating a comprehensive assessment plan based on identifying and focusing the data collection, reporting & analysis process
  • Develop/update a standardized reporting format & timeline to review and share assessment information with the BOE
  • Ensure alignment of the assessment structures & processes with the MTSS calendar, PLT structure, & ALT schedule to coordinate the regular review, analysis, and usage of data & evidence at the district, school, grade level, & classroom level during 2019.20
  • Support the expansion and implementation of common assessments with the Instruction Department
  • Continue to build assessment literacy and a data-driven culture across the organization through training, support, & modeling of assessment practices
  • Continue to research data warehousing & reporting systems

Current Actions

  • State Testing is complete & the feedback has been positive on our preparation & implementation efforts
  • Provide data and analysis to support identification of “priority pockets” to inform fall instructional planning and rapid intervention needs
  • Support & Facilitate the Spring Benchmarking Process
    • Compile & coordinate the distribution of student data reports sent home with report cards on 6.5.19
    • Complete the initial data analysis and provide the District and Schools with “data packages” that include; benchmark proficiency levels & fall to spring growth data by grade level, program, sub-groups, etc. (Winter 2018.19)
  • Facilitate and support the review & analysis of data at the district and department level for 2019.20 planning
  • Complete State Testing & ESSA analysis and reporting drafts as data becomes available and are finalized
  • Begin to compile data & update the student growth report for BOE review in July (2018 SGR)
  • Rollover & update student assessment databases

  • Continue working with the Communications Committee to determine long-term communications goals
  • Include staff and parents in communication planning both at a district level and at a school level

    • Ninety District-wide Drills have been accomplished in the 2018-19 school year

    • Mt. Prospect, Arlington Heights and EGV schools have had their panic/hold up buttons directly connected to municipality dispatch centers
