The internet

Activity 1

  • The internet was created by the US military in the 1960s and was originally called the ARPANET
    • The US wanted to design a system where information could be passed on even in the event of a catastrophe or nuclear attack
    • Data was sent along multiple routes and reconstructed at their destination
    • The system could keep running even if parts of it were destroyed

The World Wide Web

Activity 1

The World Wide Web is part of the internet that contains websites and web pages.

It was invented in 1989 by an English computer scientist called Tim Berners-Lee.

The World Wide Web is also known as ‘the WWW’ or ‘the web’.

The internet is a vast network of computers all connected together.

The World Wide Web is a service provided on the internet. It is the websites, web pages, and links found on the internet.

The activity that takes place in a minute on the internet is quite staggering!

For example, 2.1 million Snaps are created in one minute!

There are a range of services provided by the internet. These include:

  • World Wide Web
  • Email
  • Online gaming
  • Instant messaging
  • Voice over IP (VoIP) – audio calls
  • Internet of Things (IoT)
  • Media streaming (e.g. watching Netflix online)

The rules for each service are different. As a result, a different protocol is used.

  • Email is an internet service that allows people who have an email address to send and receive electronic messages.
  • Email is delivered almost instantly over great distances, and is usually free.
  • You can attach documents to emails and email multiple people at the same time.

  • In 2018, 281 billion emails were sent and received every single day.
  • Just as with regular mail, you may get emails that you did not want. This is called ‘spam’.

  • VoIP’ is short for ‘Voice over Internet Protocol’.
  • This allows voice data to be sent in packets over the internet.
  • It is cheaper than landline calls and can have many people on the call at the same time.
  • Many popular apps use VoIP to make internet calls, such as WhatsApp.

  • The Internet of Things means taking everyday ‘things’ and connecting them to the internet.
  • Connectivity’ is the key factor.
