Nannie Helen Burroughs

Born in Orange, VA, Burroughs moved to Washington, DC in 1883
Was turned down for a teaching position despite her academic achievements
She then opened her own school to educate and train poor, working class African American Women
Burroughs did not want to rely on money from wealthy donors.
Relying on small donations from Black women and children from the community, Burroughs managed to raise enough money to open the National Training School for Women and Girls
