Nannie Helen Burroughs

    • Born in Orange, VA, Burroughs moved to Washington, DC in 1883
    • Was turned down for a teaching position despite her academic achievements
    • She then opened her own school to educate and train poor, working class African American Women
    • Burroughs did not want to rely on money from wealthy donors.
    • Relying on small donations from Black women and children from the community, Burroughs managed to raise enough money to open the National Training School for Women and Girls
