Gökçen married First Lieutenant Kemal Esiner, a military geography and topography teacher at the Air School, in 1940 and gave her husband her own surname; however, she lost her husband three years later, on January 12, 1943.

Sabiha Gökçen received the highest award of his aviation career in 1996. Gökçen was ``One of the 20 Aviators who made their name in World History" at the Eagles Meeting which was held for the graduation ceremony American Air Staff College.
Sabiha Gökçen is the first and only female aviator to receive this award.
