Gökçen married First Lieutenant Kemal Esiner, a military geography and topography teacher at the Air School, in 1940 and gave her husband her own surname; however, she lost her husband three years later, on January 12, 1943.

Sabiha Gökçen received the highest award of his aviation career in 1996. Gökçen was ``One of the 20 Aviators who made their name in World History" at the Eagles Meeting which was held for the graduation ceremony American Air Staff College.

Sabiha Gökçen is the first and only female aviator to receive this award.

  • Sabiha Gökçen died at the age of 88 in Gülhane Military Medical Academy because of heart failure in 2001, on her birthday (March 22nd).

  • The Badge of the White Eagle, the highest badge given by the Yugoslav Army, and an army badge,

  • Pioneer women's plaque in their professions, given at the ceremony in the Turkish Grand National Assembly on the 50th anniversary of Turkish women gaining suffrage and election rights,
  • Honorary Doctor of Selçuk University,
  • Gold medal awarded by THK in 1989,
  • The FAI gold medal, awarded by the International Aviation Federation in 1991 to aviators showing outstanding success in all branches of aviation,
  • The title of "one of the 20 aviators who made their mark in world history" at the ceremony at the USA's Maxwell Air Base in 1996,
  • 28 plaques given by the army, various associations and organizations

Sabiha Gokcen is a successful woman who inspired all women in the world, especially Turkish women, and we remember her with respect and mercy.
