ACTIVITY 2 - PRACTICE

Students will explore urbanization in Asia by viewing a video about the rapid growth of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Allow students to read the guiding questions before beginning the video. Once students have had time to answer questions from the video, discuss answers as a class to ensure understanding.

TEACHER ACTIONS

  1. Hand out student worksheet
  2. Preview questions students need to answer
  3. Play video, pausing to allow answering of questions
  4. Facilitate class discussion over answers

STUDENT ACTIONS

  1. Watch video about Bangladesh
  2. Answer guiding questions
  3. Participate in class discussion about answers and add to responses

ACTIVITY 3 - EXHIBIT

Students will explore the systems that affect cities in Africa through an excerpt from a United Nations report. As students explore the proposed initiatives to increase the urban standard of living in Africa, they will summarize each paragraph of the excerpt with the “Say-it-in-Six” exercise.

TEACHER ACTIONS

  1. Direct students to page 4
  2. Introduce excerpt and activity
  3. Place students in small groups
  4. Monitor and provide assistance as students work

  1. Listen to introduction of excerpt and activity
  2. Work with group to summarize each portion of the excerpt into six words

CONCLUSION

Students will complete an “Exit Ticket” in which they reflect on their learnings from the day by completing a Quantitative Analysis activity.
