SFUSD MS YRBS 2023�SAMPLING INFORMATION (N=2,586)

  • The SFUSD Middle School (MS) Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) was completed in the 2022-23 school year by 2, 126 of the 3,980 randomly sampled students across 21 regular and alternative high schools, a survey completion rate of 52%.

  • All classes in a required subject or all classes meeting during a particular period of the day, depending on the school, were included in the sampling frame. Systematic equal probability sampling with a random start was used to select classes from each school that participated in the survey.

  • The survey results have been statistically weighted and can be used to make important inferences about the priority health risk behaviors of all regular and alternative school students in grades 6-8.

  • 35.6% of male students and 28.0% of female students report “rarely” or “never” wearing a helmet while rollerblading or skateboarding.

TEASING & NAME CALLING

  • Middle school students report exposure to teasing or name calling because of their gender (10.6%), real or perceived sexual orientation (12.8%), or their race/ethnicity (16.1%).

UNSTABLE HOUSING

  • 16.4% of middle school students report typically sleeping in a place other than their home or at a friend’s or relative’s home with their parents or guardians.

OTHER DRUG USE

  • Reported use of drugs at the middle school level is rare, with 0.2% of students reported using ecstasy (also called “MDMA” or “Molly”), 0.4% report ever using methamphetamines, and 0.6% report ever using cocaine.

OPIOIDS

  • Overall, 6.7% of middle school students report ever taking prescription pain medications (such as Oxycontin) without a prescription or differently than how the doctor told them to use it.

DRUGS ON SOCIAL MEDIA

  • Fewer than 1% of middle school students report buying drugs through a social media app.

SFUSD HEALTH & WELLNESS SPOTLIGHTS

FOOD INSECURITY

  • 4.7% of middle school students report going hungry “most of the time” or “always” in the month before the survey because there was not enough food in their home.

HEALTHY DRINKS

  • Nearly all middle school students (94.6%) report drinking a bottle or glass of water the day before the survey. More than half of students (57.6%) also report drinking a sugar-sweetened beverage (soda, energy drink), and significantly fewer students (51.3%) report drinking milk.

SLEEP HYGIENE

  • In the 6th grade, 79.5% of students report getting 8 or more hours of sleep on an average school night. Among 8th-grade students, 48.7% get the recommended amount of sleep. By the 12th grade, just 23.7% of students get the recommended amount of sleep.
