Title

SIOV R2 - Next-gen I/O Virtualization Framework for Next-gen Datacenters

Abstract

(1000 chars)

The modern datacenter is rapidly evolving in terms of capabilities (e.g. Networking, Storage, Compute, Artificial Intelligence), scale (e.g. # of VMs/cores), and composability (e.g. FaaS, containers). As such, the I/O virtualization mechanisms must evolve as well. In the OCP Server Project team, a workstream team was formed by several CPU, device, and OS vendors to define a next-gen I/O virtualization framework (known as Scalable I/O Virtualization Revision 2 - SIOV R2) for the datacenter ecosystem to address these needs. The key customer usages that SIOV R2 is primed to address include traditional virtual machines, confidential virtual machines, high-density containerization, nested virtualization, live migration, and partitioning of complex accelerators (e.g. GPUs).
