Time: 5 minutes

Say: We have trainers and designers here today, and you each take on a different role when it comes to authentic assessment. It helps if you understand the process for each role. When designing authentic assessment, begin with the end in mind. Ask yourself what learners should know and be able to do at the end of that piece of training. This will lead to developing learning objectives that will align with the skill or knowledge our agents need to have. Next, what tasks can the agents complete that will meet those objectives, and what does good performance of that task look like. Answering that question will provide you with criteria to evaluate against. Evaluation can either be a score from a rubric that lists all the criteria or a checklist that the trainer can use to inform next steps in delivering the material. Did the agents meet everything on that checklist? If not, what things might need revisited?

Here is a document that will help you when you are creating and using rubrics to evaluate instruction. You can use this as a resource later when we take a deep dive into your curriculum, if a rubric is something you choose to use for your authentic assessment. These are suggestions; feel free to add or remove information to meet the needs of your content.

Instructions: You will be assigned to breakout rooms. Choose a piece of your curriculum to explore and consider where you will incorporate authentic assessment into that learning activity. You will share your revised curriculum when we return to the whole group.

Time: 40 minutes

Say: Now that we have reviewed what authentic assessments are and how they can be used, it’s time to put what you learned into practice. You should have all come prepared with a piece of your curriculum that you could change to include authentic assessment. While you are in your room, the group can decide which piece of curriculum you’d like to use for this activity. Work together to design an authentic assessment for that piece of training. Don’t forget to revisit your eLearning, PDF from the eLearning, and the job aid you were just provided if you get stuck. Think about the following questions when designing your training:

What are the learning objectives for this piece of training?
What will the learners be doing to meet those objectives?
How will the learners be evaluated? (this is the authentic assessment)
What criteria will the trainer be looking for to ensure the learners have met the objectives?
Is this a formative or summative assessment, and will the learners need to be scored?
If this is a formative assessment, what kind of reteach/clarification will be needed if learners are not meeting the objectives?

You will be given 30 minutes to work together to redesign your curriculum. Afterwards, we will reconvene and you will be asked to share your plans.

Do: Divide participants into two breakout rooms. Visit the rooms as needed to offer assistance. At the end of 30 minutes, close the rooms and reconvene, then call on each group to share their material.
