What is Goal Setting?

Goal setting is the process of defining specific objectives that can be worked towards, in such a way that you know when you have achieved them

10 of 32

Reflection

  • Reflection is a useful tool to stimulate ways of looking forward

  • When starting something new, you could try scheduling regular reflection sessions (weekly or bi-weekly) to track progress, identify challenges, and adjust your approach

  • Journaling your progress will help with future questions or challenges you might have faced in past situations

11 of 32

Reflection Task

  • To help stimulate your thoughts on what could be achieved over the next 12 months, we are going to present you with 3 options to ponder in small groups

  • Consider your thoughts and feelings about the specific timeframe, situation or activity that you have done during 2024.

  • Focus on what you actually did

Looking forward

  • Vision is the overarching direction and aspiration you want to be or achieve

  • Planning is the strategic approach needed to realise your Vision.

  • Actions are the tangible objectives that you will work on within the specified timeframe

  • Measuring Outcomes is an important step to recognise once the actions are complete and the Vision has been realised

What is / isn’t able to change in your day-to-day?

Structure your day / week around your energy levels

What location do you focus best in?

Block time out in your diary

Remove distractions, turn your phone off

Consider & gather resources you might need to get started

Make it work for you

19 of 32

So what next?

“Start now. Start where you are.

Start with fear, start with doubt.

Start with hands shaking.

Start with voice trembling but start.

Start and don’t stop.

Start where you are,

With what you have.

Just… Start.”

Ijeoma Umebinyuow

“If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”

― Martin Luther King Jr.

Focus on what you can do, not what you cannot

What do you see as some of Sheffield’s most pressing challenges? Chat to the people on your table

Think of issues that maybe affect you as a student, but also problems that could be improved for the wider sheffield community

Objectives & Key Results

  • Objective is the main aim that you want to achieve

  • Key results are all the work elements that need to be completed in order to achieve the objective

  • Each key result should be SMART

  • This can be a powerful tool to use as an individual and/or in teams where you may have multiple objectives and many key results for each one

27 of 32

Objective:

Submitting an application for the Emerge Awards Showcase 2025

Key Results:

  1. Attend application launch on [date]
  2. Understand criteria & all requirements by [date]
  3. Gather information & write application
  4. Review & submit application by [date]

Each key result should be:

specific, measurable and realistic within an identified timeframe

Note: in a wider team, each objective could be managed by an individual with different key results assigned to multiple team members

OKR Example
