Using PLCs as Delivery Mechanism to Support Schools

16 of 35

Professional Learning Communities

A professional learning community (PLC) is an extended learning opportunity to foster collaborative learning among colleagues within a particular work environment or field. It is often used in schools as a way to organize teachers for collaborative learning and engagement towards reaching collective school and district goals.

Groups of 5-6

10 minutes

Directions:

  1. Introduce yourself
  2. Discuss how you are currently using the priority learning standards to guide work and conversations with schools & teachers.
  3. Discuss how you might use the needs assessment tool to pinpoint areas of leverage
  4. Where do you see your schools falling on the needs assessment?

Identify one person to write some takeaways in the chat upon return to whole group.

Sharing Our Thinking

Upon return to whole group, please type a summary of your group’s discussion in the chat box.

Overall Reflection/Debrief!

Planning for Supporting Schools

23 of 35

Tool 1

24 of 35

Tool 2

  • Based on DuFour’s PLC Model and rubric, as well as IQF.
  • Sorted by areas districts should consider when working to identify priority learning standards, focus learning, and refine systems
  • These topics will be addressed this year in our capacity building sessions
  • Work & support at each level, will help districts to move to the next level.

25 of 35

Groups of 5-6

10 minutes

Directions:

  • Introduce yourself
  • Review the two tools for Implementing the Priority Learning Standards
  • As capacity builders, how can you best help your schools based on where they are at?

Identify one person to write some takeaways by area on the interactive slides that follow.

26 of 35

  • A good roadmap - helps us know where to help our schools.
  • Success criteria might not be there - could be an area we can help districts with.
  • Customize services based on teacher, grade level, etc.
  • Major goal of updated SS is equity and teaching of skills.
  • No deployment date set.. still teach the standards as they are.
  • Will be vastly improved!!
  • Schools are not all in the same lane. Maybe add “ELA” and “Math” plans as options since districts might be at different places for different subjects, grades, etc.
  • Might need multiple plans.
  • What cluster of standards do we start with? Foundational standards, language standards, speaking and listening and grade levels - what are we prioritizing within the prioritized standards?
  • Scope of work document
    • Schools won’t be in the same place.
    • Schools within each district can be at different places and needs.
  • Gaps/unfinished learning might have changed because of the situation we are currently in.
  • Working with all contents to let them know the priority standards to help focus their instruction.
  • What other assessments can we use to help with the prioritization?

Area 1

27 of 35

Tool 1:

The differentiation helps to map out steps toward implementation

Reminds teachers and principals of Danielson

Tool 2:

Good tool for pinpointing where our districts are in this process.

Inclusion of effect size helps show research behind work and why it is important.

Possibly a summer workshop for working on this?

Sparked interest in Curriculum directors-- helps them to have a road map

Lends itself to give examples of each area of need and how to proceed.

Should we prioritize these areas for work?

How does this relate to school improvement?

Teacher leaders may be willing to use this tool.

Entry point for establishing teacher clarity.

Area 2

28 of 35

Common Vocabulary!!!

Survey is needed.

Some districts have already formed their own standards and seem to not want to focus on the priority standards.

Make a strategic plan for differentiation based on school level.

  • Cohorts/lead coaches-to build capacity across region???
  • A possible flow chart to determine???

Everything needs to align.

  • priority standards
  • IL Empower
  • Curriculum/Assessment

Challenges:

  • Inquiry rather than questioning

Area 3

29 of 35

Needs assessment is a must!

Multiple entry points is great - everyone is at a different point in the journey

ISBE needs to identify the priority standards. Cluster rather than list in a linear fashion.

Encourage participation in upcoming trainings

May need to be clarification on what the different steps mean.

We need to identify the standards and the next step should be identifying assessments so we know where students are and what success looks like

Emphasis on the process - use of tools provided will be key

Priority Standards still have a lot of meat. Example - ELA only standard 4 missing.

We can’t prioritize everything. Is this a draft?

We need a mechanism to get feedback on students learning - maybe use Engage NY (every item is tagged to a standard) as a type II assessment?

Area 4

30 of 35

Combined with Area 6 due to low number of participants

Area 5

31 of 35

The needs assessment will be very helpful, planning on adding more specifics for Area 6

Looking forward to taking more time to study the documents

The alignment of the needs assessment to the service continuum is very helpful in figuring out where to start with districts

Appreciate the differentiation for districts who are all across the board in engagement with prioritization of standards

Especially helpful for comprehensive schools who need supports related to the Standards
