I studied whether VR provides a more efficient and effective method of data visualization.

- I used Immersion Analytics and Virtualitics to analyze female participation in the Olympics over the past 120 years.

  • Licensing limitations:
    • Virtualitics: one active user
    • Immersion Analytics Oculus Visualizer: virtual room, but others could not see my graph.

  • Restriction on graph inputs, data manipulation requirements, and performance overload limitations influenced the research question:
    • Virtualitics Smart Mapping feature set up the research question.
    • Immersion Analytics: had to switch to a scatter plot with smaller csv files and modify the research question

🡺In conclusion, without advanced knowledge on plug-ins or how to add collaboration features, VR visualization software can overwhelm and direct your research instead of being a tool to help assist it.

Suggestions:

- Don’t use shared wifi or virtual machines

- Include a legend and a side panel for selected points to identify “floating” values

- Most ppl do not feel like there is collaboration unless they see evidence of others in the virtual environment -- multi-user pointers and avatars.
