Report - Heuristic Analysis Project
The following competitive analysis focuses primarily on the user’s access to recommendations and information, as well as an itinerary, and it reviews two direct competitor mobile apps and one company mobile app with similar concepts.
This analysis takes into account 3 different NNG usability heuristic principles: visibility of system status, match between system and the real world, and user control and freedom.
Mobile app features were rated based upon the following scale:
= extremely poor/absent = poor = average = good = very good
1st Competitor
My Disney Experience App https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/plan/my-disney-experience/mobile-apps/
1st Competitor
My Disney Experience App https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/plan/my-disney-experience/mobile-apps/
The homepage of the My Disney Experience mobile app has great content organization and the scope is recognizable. Images are consistent, minimalist, and contemporary. The app is very responsive, but does exhibit some lagging in certain sections.
This analysis shows excellent performance in visibility of system status, as the app assures the user of knowledge of what is going on. For example, as items on the itinerary are completed, they disappear from the itinerary list. However, the entirety of the trip shows up in one continuous itinerary screen where long trips could result in endless scrolling. User control and freedom also shows excellence, as the app contains “emergency exits.” If the user tries to make a dining reservation that interferes with a FastPass, the app will notify the user and question if they wish to continue with their choice.
The app’s match between system and the real world is good, as information appears in a logical and effective manner. However, some information is presented in system-oriented terms.

Score:
The homepage of the My Disney Visit mobile app has average content organization, but could be confusing as several buttons are poorly positioned/labeled. However, the content organization of the itinerary section is excellent. Users can view day-by-day plans, including that day’s crowd level and weather. Images are used for visualization of attractions, but several are grainy and outdated. The app is fairly responsive, but does exhibit some lagging and difficulty in navigation in certain sections.
This analysis shows its best performance in its match between system and the real world, as it uses clear and effective language. Several buttons are like real world conversations, such as “This attraction is OK. I’m not heartbroken if I don’t do it.”
This app scored lower in visibility of system status, as the app sometimes leaves you feeling lost. For example, the recommendation ratings buttons are unclear until you click on each one. User control and freedom is also lacking, as the app traps you without “emergency exits.” For instance, several trash cans delete everything and there is no escape from upgrading your itinerary on the purchase page.

The homepage of the Disney World Lines mobile app has poor content organization, and the user is immediately immersed into all text. Users can view pre-created plans or create their own. Pre-created plans are categorized by party characteristics or duration of stay. There are no images utilized within this app. Functions are barely responsive, as lots of lagging and never-ending preloaders show up, as well as difficulty in navigation.
This analysis shows its best performance in its match between system and the real world, as it sometimes uses clear and effective language. Some buttons are like real world conversations, however there is no logical and effective manner to how information is presented.
This app scored lowest in visibility of system status, as the app constantly leaves you feeling lost. Each button consists of long words, sometimes which hang off the screen remaining illegible. User control and freedom is also lacking, as the app almost always traps you without “emergency exits.” The only buttons that allow you to return to previous screens are backward moving buttons .
