School District of Mauston Curriculum & Assessments - Kindergarten

English Language Arts

Students attending the School District of Mauston will engage in learning activities to help them meet Board-adopted standards. In English Language Arts, students work to master standards in Phonics, Reading, Speaking & Listening, Language, and Writing. The primary resource teachers use is the Into Reading program offered by HMH. The goal of reading and writing instruction is for students to read different texts quickly and easily and express themselves clearly in writing.

Assessments

Kindergarten students are assessed using AimswebPlus, the State selected screener, for early literacy skills in fall, winter and spring. Results are shared with parents following each assessment window.

Students also participate in the iReady Diagnostic to measure growth across the year.

Throughout the curriculum, teachers use observations, quizzes and writing samples to monitor student learning based on State Standards.

HMH utilizes the 8 Evidence-Based Elements of Reading and Literacy Instruction from the growing body of Science of Reading research.

  1. Phonemic Awareness Instruction
  2. Phonics Instruction
  3. Fluency Instruction
  4. Vocabulary Instruction
  5. Comprehension Instruction
  6. Writing Instruction
  7. Explicit Instruction on Language
  8. Knowledge Building

Mathematics

Students attending the School District of Mauston will engage in learning activities to help them meet Board-adopted standards. In Mathematics, students work to master standards in Number & Operations, Algebraic Thinking, Measurement, and Geometry. The primary resource teachers use is i-Ready Classroom Math. Mathematics is taught in a Workshop model, as seen in the image below, along with the units for Kindergarten.

Assessments

Progress toward standards mastery in Mathematics is measured with the i-Ready Math assessment, taken on an iPad three times a year. Teachers share this information with families at conferences.

Resources for Families

Teachers send home the Weekly Family Letter explaining what the child will be learning in the classroom with tips for families.

Academic Standards for Mathematics

i-Ready Math

Computations are only one part of mathematics. Mathematics is also about communicating, making connections, and finding ways to solve real-world problems. We need students who can persevere in thinking about a problem and attempt a solution, ask good questions, understand that there are different ways to solve a problem and communicate their solutions to others.

Some instructional methods you are seeing in your student’s mathematics materials may be unfamiliar to you. These newer methods are helping students make connections to concepts they have already learned to strengthen their understanding before we move on to something new. Research has shown that making these connections is an important step in developing strong mathematics foundations.

Unit 1 - Numbers 0-5: Counting, Writing, and Comparing

Unit 2 - Numbers 6-10: Counting and Writing, Comparing and Sorting

Unit 3 - Geometry: Naming, Comparing, and Building Shapes

Unit 4 - Numbers Within 10: Addition and Subtraction

Unit 5 - Numbers 11-100: Teen Numbers, and counting by 1s and 10s

Unit 6 - Measurement: Comparing Length, Height, and Weight

The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions to suit your child’s needs. Each item a student sees is individualized based on their answer to the previous question. For example, a series of correct answers will result in slightly harder questions, while a series of incorrect answers will yield slightly easier questions.

i-Ready Instruction provides students with lessons based on their individual skill level and needs, so your child can learn at a pace that is just right for them. These lessons are fun and interactive to keep your child engaged as they learn.

i-Ready

Online instruction is part of student learning each week. Teachers will use information gained from assessments and classroom instruction to engage students in online lessons that are tied to specific learning needs of each student. While i-Ready Classroom Math is on grade level instruction, i-Ready helps differentiate learning for students who struggle and students who excel.
