Sustainable development goals or SDGs, can act as a valuable tool for business’s to measure their progress in sustainability, but how can a business like Cape Santa Maria maximize its impact?

By prioritizing SDGs that are most relevant to the hospitality industry and the resort’s operations and strategy will .

After conducting a gap analysis and identifying key areas of opportunity for Cape Santa Maria, we determined that SDG 8 and 13 will maximize the resort’s impact.

SDG 8 is about supporting sustainable economic growth, productive employment and decent work for all.

There is a compelling opportunity for the resort to create a competitive edge here, because although the hospitality industry is moving towards environmental sustainability, there is a market gap in addressing the social responsibility aspect of sustainability to the same extent. Furthermore, our research suggests that improving economic connections with the local community will prove mutually beneficial, creating value for the resort and its guests as well as the community and this can be done in three ways:

1. community-based tourism;

2. staff empowerment and engagement

3. highlighting community involvement and connections.

Sean will expand on this later in our recommendations

SDG 13 is about taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

Cape Santa Maria has the opportunity to make great strides in tackling climate change through 3 impactful ways:

1. decreasing the carbon impact generated by air travel and energy use

2. increasing the amount of disaster resilience investment back into the country

3. integrating sustainability into the value proposition of the organization. Cape Santa Maria can build a brand image and reputation of sustainability and then expand into a new market, eco-conscious consumers.

So now, Annie will discuss our analysis of the resort’s current performance with regards to SDG 8

SDG 13:

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

Based on our research of the resort, we can see that currently the resort and its performance on Urgent Action to combat climate change and its impact goes as follows.

Strength:

Good at absorbing carbon

One hectare of mangroves can offset 726 tonnes of coal emissions

Without a pool the resort does not require additional energy to constantly maintain the water quality, power lights, or run pumps, reducing GHG emissions and lowering the resort's expenses

Weakness:

Customer base are foreigners.

International transport of air and cruise contribute to between three and five-percent of the world's total carbon dioxide emissions.

They dont promote the use of any energy efficient technology such as LEDs, smart technology to regulate temperature in occupied rooms, or modern appliances.
Increasing operational costs by $300,000 to $1 million and roughly 835,000 tons of carbon emissions over 7 years.

Based on these weaknesses we have identified some opportunities for the resort to consider, that Julia will bring up in her recommendations.

Recommendations: SDG 13

Seek further external engagement in order to begin the process of seeking out and integrating feasible sustainability solutions.

Introduce sustainable energy solutions to temperature control and appliance use.

Promote carbon offsets to travelers coming to Cape Santa Maria Beach Resort.

Thank you Aaron for providing us with such a thorough overview of how the company is currently performing with respect to SDG 13. Moving in to our recommendations…

Beginning the process of integrating strategic and purposeful sustainability measures into your business operations is not and should not be something done overnight. It is a part of a larger and longer process, but it is a process that begins right now.��1) - As our first recommendation, we propose that in order to begin addressing SDG 13, Cape Santa Maria Beach Resort seek further external consultation and hire an expert to evaluate their current processes.

This is an intentional and purposeful move that the organization can take to start taking urgent action to address the climate crisis. External engagement can involve seeking advice/counsel from local government, as well as pursuing an eco-certification process available to hotels and resorts.
We believe Cape Santa maria has made an excellent stride in engaging our services, but there is a wide array of sustainability consultants and energy coaches that can provide a data-driven analysis of your organization and identify cost-saving opportunities to integrate sustainability practices.

2) - This leads into the second recommendation, which is to introduce sustainable energy solutions to temperature control and appliance use. In brief - efficient energy = lower bills.

Efficient energy = healthier planet. Smart A/C technology like SensorFlow automatically turn off A/C units when guests aren’t in the room or when windows are left open.
The Paradise Island Beach Club, was able to slash its energy costs by approximately $250,000 a year by installing smart technology software upon their air conditioners and unplugging unnecessary appliances.
By identifying opportunities to consolidate appliance use, unplugging unnecessary devices, and investing in certified efficient appliances, Cape Santa Maria can save on inefficient energy and benefit the environment.

3) - Our third and final recommendation is for Cape Santa Maria is to promote carbon offsets to travelers coming to Cape Santa Maria Beach Resort in order to balance the impact that the two flight minimum has on the environment.

Similar to how Air Canada is partnered with Less Emissions to encourage environmentally conscious travellers to purchase financial contributions to sustainable projects.
Given the remote nature of the island, motivating guests make these financial contributions to sustainable projects can balance the environmental impact of a flight is a simple and measurable sustainably solution.

That concludes our recommendations for getting going on SDG 13, I’ll let Ameena wrap us up.
