Zombies are coming! Zombies are coming!

Okay...let’s not panic! We are Scientists and Engineers!

Everybody just calm down!

Your mission is to fortify your city against the very smart zombies heading your way!

“Fortifying” does not mean go to battle with Zombies. You are not creating systems to fight the zombies. Your responsibility is to keep your community safely protected waiting in place until help arrives! Focus on safety!

  1. Determine which buildings are critical to public safety and sustainability of your city. Put a same color dot on each of those structures on your map. You may discover you need to add some structures you didn’t have before. Do that now. Be sure all structures are labeled so citizens know where to go!
  2. You will need your Science notebook now more than ever! Start a new “header” in your Google doc. or paper notebook labeled “Lesson Two” for all your notes. You can use this chart in your notes or create one of your own. You need to identify your structures on your map in a list and then give a reason why each one is important for protecting the city. Your city council needs this information!

Did you know that cells are experts at building great defenses? Since we are scientists, we could use the model of a cell to help us defend our city!

Cells have parts or components in their systems. Those are called “organelles”.

We can learn from them and make our city stronger!

Zombie Apocalypse - Part Two

1. Take a look at how the different components or “organelles” in a cell system work by reading the Cell Organelles Vocabulary List.

Different organelles in a cell work like the buildings in your city model.! How could you use ideas from the cell organelles to make your city stronger? Make changes if you want!

What cell parts “match” your city parts? Use the information you put on the chart (slide 5) and this form and add it to your notebook to compare them and see if you could fortify your city even more!

Take a screenshot of your final city map and upload it into your notebook or on a slide!

Good job! Today we explored the use of Patterns (another cross-cutting concept in Science and Engineering.) Patterns help us organize our thinking.

Your last step in this lesson is to “think about how you think” otherwise known as metacognition !

On the next slide you will see a choice board of two of the Science and Engineering Practices we want to develop.

Choose one for today that you think you were doing while you were determining how to protect your city based on the protections a cell has.!

Then, click on that choice and write down in your notebook whether you were thinking more like an engineer today or a scientist.
