Art Quilts with Kay Donges
About 10 years ago, our own Kay Donges was introduced to Art Quilting at an MMQG Newcomers Orientation, and the light bulb came on! She was not enthralled with the precision piecing required of traditional patchwork, but she liked needle-turn applique, so this painter and retired high school art teacher found her calling with art quilts. She saw immediate similarities between painting with acrylics and creating “paintings” with fabric.
This piece, which she calls “Ruby,” was her first of many portrait quilts.
“It’s Not Just Black and White” is Kay’s combination of an Op Art background with a portrait.
“Out on the Town” shows how art quilting can easily incorporate non-fabric items. The ribbons on the bustiers lace through metal grommets, and beads and crystals embellish the background.
Kay usually works from photographs, with permission. This one, “The Bride Wore Red,” was from a magazine photo, and won a first place ribbon at the Paducah, KY, quilt show in 2015. The background is black fabric, with the turquoise and gold cutouts overlaid.
The original concept was to show the style and fashions from Downton Abbey, but “The Mistress of the Abbey” evolved. This quilt took a first place ribbon at the MMQG Quilt Fest in 2013.
“A Toast to Toulouse-Lautrec” combines a background of Toulouse-Lautrec poster images, which Kay painted onto muslin, and an applique portrait of the woman. This won a Judges Choice Award at the Houston Quilt Show.
Kay also showed photographs of quilts that she no longer has in her possession. “Simple Pleasures” was donated to the Houston Quilt Show Auction. “Daddy’s Boy,” with Chester the Dog guarding Henry’s coat and hat, was a Judges Choice in Paducah.
“Hope” is a portrait of one of Kay’s former students. You can see the progress of the project here. The hair is couched.
“The Little Red Hen” was created at the Russian International Quilt Festival and donated to the town’s effort to cover the park in one-meter-square quilts.
“The Little Red Hen” in progress Kay does not enjoy doing feathers!
“Somewhere my Love” was inspired by traditional Russian headdresses, and named for the theme song in the Dr. Zhivago film. It has 14,000 hand sewn beads, most in the border design.
“Neon Lights” was created from hand-dyed Cherrywood fabrics, and was featured in Simply Moderne Quilt Magazine in 2019.
The painting shown, “A Golden at the Museum,” was the inspiration for the three dogs and a Milk Bone quilt.
“Sheer Amazement” is a portrait of Susan Slaton’s grandson, and features a favorite of toddlers: bubbles!
“Swimming through the Morning Light” is based on a photograph by underwater photographer Sara Lee. The background is custom-printed on satin by Spoonflower.
“Shelter in Place” was entered into a show of COVID quarantine-themed quilts. The reflection of the man’s face, on the left side of the quilt, is printed onto organza.
“The Three Wise Men”
“Blue Ridge Beauty” is based on a painting of a Rhododendron that Kay had previously painted.
“Wolfgang” the Corgi.
If you’ve eaten at Dan’s Cuban Grill in Blairsville, you’ve seen the painting of these Havana musicians, which was painted by the restaurant owner’s mother. Kay had the background street scene printed onto fabric by Spoonflower, then appliqued the musicians onto the background to create “Tres Amigos - Havana Harmony.”.
“Moonlight Majesty” is probably Kay’s one and only landscape quilt.
“I Love Lucy,” complete with false eyelashes was also the project for a class Kay taught a few years ago. Look at this month’s Sew and Tell to see one student’s work!
“Beau,” the Australian Shepherd, and “Can I Keep it, Please?” are stunning examples of Kay’s animal portraits.
Irene Lambright’s granddaughter is the subject of “I’ve got to Crow.”
You may have followed Kay’s progress on these portraits of herself and husband, Henry, on the MMQG Facebook page. “Bluebeard” and “Me, Myself and I” are based on photographs.
“Twins with Friends - Do you Feel a Breeze?” is Henry’s example of art quilting.
2022 Sleep-in-your-own-Bed Retreat
The Retreat at the Blairsville Civic Center was a resounding success! With an emphasis on making blocks, bags and tops for our various groups (and earning door prize tickets for doing so), the 40+ quilters made 97 Quilts of Valor “Floating Churn Dash” blocks; 27 tops and 3 finished quilts for Hugs and Kisses; 37 wheelchair bags, about 80 adult bibs and a couple of quilts for Heart 2 Heart; and 35 blocks for Comfort Quilts, as well as working on their own projects. In addition, we collected $120 to donate to Castoff Pet Rescue, who kindly loaned us 25 of their eight-foot-long tables that they use for Wednesday night Bingo games.
Thanks to everyone who helped organize this event is a short amount of time:

Sew-and-Tell!
Sandi Brock
These are quilts made for my son and his family who are missionaries in Pucallpa, Peru. The blue and white Log Cabin Star is for Corynn, now in college in Ohio, the Amish one was made with pattern and fabric at Bless My Stitches and was given to Clara, 16, the Green and blue is for Ethan who also has just entered college, and the last one, a Kaleidoscope quilt, is the which one my Daughter-in-law chose when she saw a similar one online. Quite the job! I no longer allow anyone to choose just any quilt and ask me to make a specific quilt!!
Meredith Warwick

This is a Kathy Doughty pattern made with mostly aboriginal prints.
Sue Peters-Ferree
A Sarah Fielke pattern. I wanted to use this big floral fabric from Kaffe Fassett without cutting it up, so that is what is in the corners. The center is appliqued.
Teresa Plott
I’m very proud of my machine-embroidered labels. This label goes on this baby quilt made of lots of blue scraps.
Sandi Brock
These farm animal placemats are a Lori Holt design, and the grands will get to use them when they come and visit!
Irene Lambright
Here is my Kaffe fat quarter quilt; the pattern is a free pattern from sewcanshe.com, and it was quilted by Mark Tucker at Mountain Quilts.
Ann Blackburn
A jacket quilted from Kantha fabric, which is from old Indian saris. Ann stabilized the fabric on muslin, then made the jacket from these 6” squares.

These “Sparrows” don’t all face the same direction, and if you’re not really, really careful about that, you can do a lot of unstitching!
Leslie Boone
Earlier this month went to Quiltville Inn for a retreat. This is my quilt that I started October 2021 and finished October 2022. The pattern is Bonnie Hunter’s Straits of Mackinac. 36 blocks with 51 pieces in each, plus pieced borders.
Pam Wood
Although these aren’t new, it’s the right meeting to show these Halloween wall hangings.
