Instructions:
This table is a good tool for you to use.
Let’s do some converting!
Now that we have a tool to help us convert, let’s practice converting.
There are a few simple steps you can use to help you convert.
Example
Many years ago the standard size for a pop can was 280 mL. What is that in fluid ounces?
Let f be the number of fluid ounces in an old pop can.
f fl. oz.
280 mL
According to our sheet, there are 29.573 mL in 1 fl. oz.
1 fl. oz.
29.573 mL
=
f fl. oz.
(280 mL)(1 fl. oz.)
29.573 mL
=
f fl. oz.
9.47 fl.oz
=
Therefore there are about 9.47 fl. oz. in 280 mL
Example
One cup is 8 fluid ounces, what is that in mL?
Let m be the number of mL in one cup.
m mL
8 fl. oz.
According to our sheet, there are 29.573 mL in 1 fl. oz.
29.573 mL
1 fl. oz.
=
m mL
(8 fl. oz.)(29.573 mL)
1 fl. oz.
=
m mL
236.584 mL
=
Therefore there are about 236.6 mL in
1 fl. oz.
Example
Mary measures herself as weighing 58 kg, what is that in pounds?
Let p be the Mary’s weight in lbs.
p lbs
58 kg
According to our sheet, there are 2.2 lbs in 1 kg.
2.2 lbs
1 kg
=
p lbs
(58 kg)(2.2 lbs)
1 kg
=
p lbs
127.6 lbs
=
Therefore Mary is approximately 128 lbs.
Assignment
ROAD TRIP!
Your assignment is due next Monday at the end of class. Every day you will be given time to work on it.
All assignments are to be returned to me by the end of class every day.
Failure to do so will result in a 0 for the unit!
