NWEA MAP Basics: What is MAP?

  • MAP is…
    • an academic growth monitoring instrument.
      • While the MAP test does measure achievement, its primary function is to measure growth over a semester and beyond (over years).
      • The grade level is used to establish a benchmark and compare students’ growth to other students.
      • Using MAP helps the instructional team and students to move from an achievement mindset to a growth mindset.

NWEA MAP Basics: What is MAP?

  • MAP…
    • Helps to monitor the growth mindset…this means that, no matter your instructional level, low or high, you should still GROW!
      • We know that students have instructional gaps, but how do we know what gaps are closing and to what extent?

NWEA MAP Basics: What is MAP?

  • MAP…
    • From experience:
      • Provides insight on how students could perform on the state assessment before they take the test
      • Experienced a 90% or above correlation between the MAP scores and the STAAR tests for English and Math.
      • This means that 90% of the time, MAP and STAAR scores align, telling us the probability of students passing or not passing the STAAR tests

Student Instructional Growth at the Student Level

  • The reliability of the MAP data has been high in predicting instructional growth and achievement on the STAAR assessments.
  • We have used MAP data to:
    • Plan differentiation - especially for Inclusion and Resource Classes
    • Identify the skills students need to refine or develop to access grade-level content
    • Identify the areas for growth targeting STAAR achievement levels - Approaches, Meets, Masters
    • Organize gap tutoring,
    • Guide instruction for SAT growth

Do’s and Don'ts for the test

  • Do’s:
  • Charge your Chromebook before testing!
  • Take the test seriously – it helps teachers know how to teach you!
  • Pace yourself – the test will usually take between 40 to 60 minutes, depending on the test.
  • Use your results to take ownership of your learning and growth
  • Do Not:
  • Rapid guessing—Don’t click the buttons without trying to answer the questions. The test will stop if you guess rapidly!
  • Take too long to answer a question – if you don’t know the answer after 1 or 1.5 minutes, choose your best answer and move on!

MAP Growth vs. Achievement

Growth is the positive difference in RiT scores between where a student starts the year and where they are at the end of the instructional period.

The growth is also normed to compare the growth to other students and schools.

Achievement is the measure of the application of skills and the knowledge of concepts based on complexity compared to other students.

Achievement is also normed to find where our students fall into the achievement distribution scale.
