What is an Externship?

  • It’s an experience in which teachers spend time in a workplace to learn through direct experience about trends, skill requirements and opportunities in industries related to their subject in order to enrich and strengthen their teaching and bring relevance to student learning.

  • The purpose of a teacher externship is to engage in activities in business and industry, and/or service-based organizations, to learn how classroom content and learning strategies are applied in the workplace.

Considerations

  • Our goal is to work expose students to careers in high wage and in demand fields
  • Talking to HR about hiring practices and things students should know about the industry is important
  • You may want to help with lesson planning in addition to being hosting an externship site
  • May be asked to host field trips to supplement the lesson for students
  • If you are interested, but not sure what courses would be the best fit, we are here to help and bridge those conversations
