• I can demonstrate increased independence with the different purposes of using technology (toys vs tools).
• I can locate the different parts of a computer, especially specific letters on the keyboard to prepare for future touch-typing instruction in grades 2+.
• I can make choices about what digital learning resources to use based on audience and purpose.
• I can share and listen to the ideas of others digitally.

Clever is a tool to help students log into apps. Teachers can set up their own Clever landing page and access Clever badges for students.

Students are learning the following technology skills in 1st grade:

• Type words and sentences with capitals and punctuation.
• Choose how they are showing what they know and explain why, for example, when to record their voice vs. typing a response.
• Share their work with the class on Seesaw and view other students’ work.

1st grade keyboarding goals:

• Navigate with arrow keys
• Recognize all the keys on the keyboard and know what they do
• Examples: numbers, letters, shift, space, return/enter, backspace, “esc”, caps lock, etc.
• Two-finger type letters, numbers and words (“hunt and peck” method)
• Use the trackpad to move the mouse and click and double-click

Before using technology in the classroom it’s best to think about how you will manage the technology.

We suggest:

• labeling devices with a number (with tape or sticker)
• printing and storing Clever badges for students
• create a schedule for when to use Chromebooks

Digital Agency

Digital Agency (formerly Digital Citizenship) helps students navigate their digital environments safely and responsibly.

All elementary students in SFUSD should receive 30 minutes of Digital Agency instruction monthly.

⌨️ Magic pictures: lowercase alphabet

Activities with a keyboard icon ⌨️ next to them require a device such as a Chromebook or an iPad with a physical keyboard. These digital activities can be done as a station or a choice time activity that can be reset quickly using version history. They can also be put on Clever for students to access their own copy.
