COLD OPEN DELUXE ✦ Nº 18 / 20

The Man Who Climbs Mountains in Shorts

He sits in ice for hours and runs marathons in the snow half-naked — and science can't fully explain him.

THE 'ICEMAN'

Meet Wim Hof

Wim Hof is a Dutch athlete famous for surviving extreme cold that would kill most people. His feats sound made up — until you see the Guinness World Records and lab tests that back them up.

THE FEATS

A résumé of the impossible

He has done things bodies aren't supposed to do.

ICE

Sat submerged in ice for around two hours

MOUNTAINS

Climbed high on Everest and Kilimanjaro in shorts

SNOW

Ran a full marathon barefoot above the Arctic Circle

DESERT

Ran a marathon with no water

THE SCIENCE TEST

They injected him with a toxin. His body barely reacted.

In a controlled study, researchers gave Hof a bacterial toxin that normally causes fever and sickness. Using his breathing method, he suppressed the immune response — something scientists thought was impossible to control on purpose.

THE METHOD

MIND ↔ BODY

HE CONTROLS 'AUTOMATIC' SYSTEMS ON PURPOSE

Breathing, cold, and focus

His method combines specific breathing patterns, cold exposure, and concentration. He claims — and studies suggest — that it lets him consciously influence body systems long assumed to run entirely on autopilot.

THE CAUTION

Impressive — but not a stunt to copy blindly.

Hof's abilities are real and studied, but extreme cold and forceful breathing can be genuinely dangerous. The lesson isn't 'go jump in ice' — it's that the limits of the body may be further out than we assumed.

THE POINT

The 'automatic' parts of you may be more under your control than anyone thought.

Wim Hof blurred the line between what the mind can and can't reach inside the body — and gave scientists a genuinely puzzling case to study.

What do you think?

How much of your 'automatic' body could you learn to control?

When does an amazing feat cross into a dangerous idea to copy?
