Types of Schools in Australia

  • Public/state schools – unisex, free education
  • Private schools – paid, religious education
  • International schools – for students who come from abroad
  • Girl ONLY schools – only females can attend, paid education
  • Boy ONLY schools – only males can attend, paid education

Timings

  • Typically, Australian schools go for 6 hours per day, 9am to 3pm.
  • 4 periods/sessions of 70 minutes
  • 3 breaks
  • Morning tea – snack, 25 minutes
  • Lunch – 30 minutes
  • Afternoon tea – snack, 15 minutes

Uniform in Australian Schools

  • Uniform is very strict in Australia
  • ALL schools, public or private have uniform that you MUST follow
  • No make up
  • No jewelry
  • Only 1 type of shoes
  • School socks

Formal

  • Graduation is what we call our final celebration of secondary school
  • When you finish Year 12 in Australia, you have a big dance/ball
  • Everyone dresses up very pretty with partners and has a night of awards, music, and dancing.
  • This is held on the LAST day of school ever for these students

Rules

  • There are very strict rules in Australian schools, with big consequences
  • Most common consequences are for:
  • Wrong uniform (makeup, jewelry, shoes)
  • Skipping class (Wagging)
  • Bad behaviour (not listening to teacher or acting poorly to other students
  • Not completing school work/tasks/assessment
  • Bullying

Electives and Grade Levels

  • In Australia High (Secondary) Schools we have 6 grade levels:
  • Grade 7 – 11/12 years old
  • Grade 8 – 12/13 years old
  • Grade 9 – 13/14 years old
  • Grade 10 -14/15 years old
  • Grade 11 – 15/16 years old
  • Grade 12 -16/17 years old
  • FINISH

  • We also choose ELECTIVES in school in Australia:
  • Art, drama, HPE, music, technology, cooking, manual arts/building.

Assessment (Assignments and Exams)

  • Assessment in Australia is very frequent
  • Students get assessed every school term for every subject
  • 1 exam and 1 assignment per school term for each subject

  • Example:
  • 1 exam and 1 assignment for maths
  • 1 exam and 1 assignment for science
  • 1 exam and 1 assignment for history, English, and so on.
  • Typically, students have 12 assessment tasks per TERM.
  • Term = 10 weeks.

Grading/Marking System

  • In some countries they use 1-10.
  • For example: In English you get a 7/10.

  • In Australia, we use letters.
  • A-F
  • A, B and C are a PASS
  • D, E and F are a FAIL
  • For example: In English you get a B.

School Year Layout (Terms)

  • In Australia there is 4 school terms
  • Each term goes for 10 weeks long

  • Term 1 – January 22nd to April 12th
  • Term 2 – April 22nd to June 26th
  • Term 3 – July 10th to September 22nd
  • Term 4 – October 2nd to December 12th

Holidays

School Holidays in Australia are between each of the 4 School Terms.

We have 4 holiday breaks:

Easter Holidays (in April for 2 weeks) between Terms 1 and 2

Winter Holidays (in July for 2 weeks) between Terms 2 and 3

Spring Holidays (in September for 2 weeks) between Terms 3 and 4

Christmas/Summer Holidays (in December and January for 6 weeks) at the end of the year between Terms 4 and 1 of the new year.
