But First… Introductions

  • Your Name (what you go by)
  • Something about you that’s the same from last year
  • Something about you that’s NEW - a hobby, an experience you had, a game you played, etc.

Day 1

Thursday August 3, 2023

Life, Animal Behavior, & Experimental Design

Why do we care what living things are made of?

7 of 35

Time for Isopods!

Observe the isopods

  • Observe and gently move them with the paint brush to examine their anatomy and behavior.
  • What do you notice about them? With your partner, write down your observations.

Movement: Taxis vs Kinesis

Taxis - movement in a particular direction toward or away from a stimulus

Kinesis - random non-directional movement in response to a stimulus

Lab Design & Data Analysis

Why do we care what living things are made of?

Would you rather…

  • Be trapped in a room with hundreds of crickets?
  • Be trapped in a room with a snake?

Graphing & Analyzing Data

16 of 35

Standard Deviation

  • Measure of how dispersed the data is in relation to the mean.
  • Approx. 2/3 of data is within 1 std dev of the average
  • Low standard deviation means data are clustered around the mean, and high standard deviation indicates data are more spread out.

17 of 35

Standard Deviation

18 of 35

Standard Error of the Mean

  • How GOOD is your data?
  • Measure of how far the sample average may deviate from the actual average
  • Measurement of trust in your average
  • Dependent on
    • standard deviation of the data
    • sample size

In google sheets:

  • Stdev / sqrt(count)

Inquiry Lab and Communicating Investigative Results

Why do we care what living things are made of?

25 of 35

Today’s Tasks:

Animal Behavior Inquiry: Complete part 2 of the lab, testing your team’s unique hypothesis.

Lab Report Guidelines: Read the guidelines, look over the template, and begin your group write up.

26 of 35

Mid-Class Meetings:

  1. Share one experimental success and one struggle. Get feedback / ideas from your partner.

2. How do labs in AP Biology compare to experiments you’ve done in past courses? How are reports similar and different?

27 of 35

Upcoming:

  • Tomorrow 8/8 – ASVAB during 1st & 2nd periods
  • Team lab write up due by Monday 8/14
  • Resubmissions due by Tuesday 8/22
