Interfacing the mobile app with the SQL database was a difficult step

This is Mr. Livingstone who is our business mentor. He is helping the students come up with a working business model and a business plan

What good is the best app in the world unless it also has a great marketing plan?

This is an example of connecting experts to students

STEAM

Technovation

Technovation was a huge project and a big part of the learning is for students to figure out how to manage such a project

14 of 31

STEAM

Technovation

The expert mentors and Mr. Chow never told the students what to do, we only helped them to look at all sides of a decision and let them chose their own path

15 of 31

STEAM

Technovation

In addition to acquiring all the programming and business skills, students learned to manage a big project and plan ahead, set their own deadlines

STEAM

Technovation

Of course technology is not limited to programming skills, the students used computer aided design (CAD), vector graphic editors and the laser cutter to make their own t-shirts :)

STEAM

Technovation

STEAM / Technovation - they made this logo for their app then used a vector graphic editing program to produce it on the laser to iron it onto a t-shirt

So many skills needed to pull off Technovation!

From programming, to graphical editing to business

Making our own t-shirts came in at a cost of about $6 and was a lot of fun giving us full control of what we wanted it to look like!

The girls attended several workshops hosted by SFU over the course of the year … the last one they attended was a really good one on how to make a venture pitch, I learned something too!

They fed us a good lunch which always helps :)

We are waiting to enter the theater where they will announce the results

28 of 31

STEAM

Technovation

We had to make a post too… programming the mobile app, writing the business plan, making the videos were the main parts … there were many other smaller tasks to complete

29 of 31

STEAM

Technovation

We thought we had something because the judges spoke about our use of SQL and various mobile device features that we used

30 of 31

STEAM

Technovation

They didn’t speak about anyone else’s app in such high regard

But it wasn’t the case this year, maybe next :)
