Stress related disorder now rank as our nation's single most prominent health problem. Because these disorders can strike anyone, regardless of his or her age or background, stress has indeed become a household word throughout the United States.
We worry about it, write about it, talk about it, listen to infomercials about it, read about it and lose sleep over it. Some seek professional help, some change jobs, dissolve marriages, argue with neighbors or family members, or yell at anyone who is within earshot.
Children too must contend with stress in today's rapidly changing, highly pressurized world. Although we as adults take our own stress seriously, we are prone to assume that stress factors in the lives of children are minor when compared to ours. But that just isn't so. Children worry and feel anxious about assignments, getting to school on time, wondering if they will have anyone to play with on the playground, peer pressure, conflicts, ongoing bullying from siblings, sitting in a classroom trying to understand theE nglish language, keeping up with latest fashions, or not being able to keep up, listening to family members argue, or witnessing disruptive students within their classrooms. The list goes on and on. It is estimated that more than one half of all children in the U.S. now suffer from some type of stress related disorder. As hard as we try to protect and guard our children, what is even more startling is that younger and younger children are being affected by stress.
In our Social Skills lessons this month we have been learning about stress survival skills. We discuss types of stress factors and their causes. We proceeded to explore how stress affects our mental and physical attitudes. We addressed effective methods and strategies for dealing with stress so that our students can feel empowered to help themselves relax. Ask your child to demonstrate... types of exercises, tense and release, silent scream, shake like a wet dog, deep breathing, and using your imagination to meditate. These are just a few of the ways a child can cope with internal stress. Through caring and sharing, you and your children can reduce stress and work together to improve the quality of life for every member of your family.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Fournier
Hello Streiber Families,
When your student is absent from school, please make sure to call the office to let them know your student will be out. If your child has a fever, they must be fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication before coming back to school. A fever is considered anything above 100.0.
When a student has a fever, it means their body is fighting an infection whether bacteria or viral. It is the body’s way of healing itself. If you are concerned that your student is not feeling well, it is always a good idea to reach out to your pediatrician.
When a student needs medication at school even over the counter medications, a doctor’s order and signed parent consent is needed. Any medication that your child may need while at school must be brought in by a responsible adult. Please do not place medication (i.e. inhalers, cough drops, lotions etc.) in a student’s backpack. These medications are not monitored by an adult. Another student may take and use it irresponsibly.
It may not be your child, but we need to make sure everyone is safe.
Recently, there have been many incidents of students coming off the bus and say they are sick and want to go home. If your child is not feeling well before they leave the house, please do not send them to school.
If your student is dismissed sick from school before 11:30 am, they are marked absent for the day. If you are not sure if your student is truly sick, send me an email to let know what their symptoms are and I will do my best to check in with them.
I hopefully the warm weather will be here again,
Nurse Kim
