Longwood Gardens – beautiful gardens originally funded by DuPont https://longwoodgardens.org/history/1870-1954

Kennett Square – Worlds largest producer of mushrooms (the food), annual mushroom festival complete with every mushroom food you can think of, even mushroom ice cream

Philly is probably the closest city and has an abundance of food, activities, sports (has 5 national sports teams (soccer, football, baseball, hockey, basketball)

There are ~5 restaurant weeks in Philly (manayunk neighborhood, center city (x2), university city, passyunk) that have great food deals for $15-35 for a three course meal at top tier restaurants of all cuisines. Only approximately an hour drive!

We have Six Flags amusement park close by in Jersey, and within 2-3 hour drives we have Dorney Park, Hershey Park (and Hershey World!), and other fun summer getaways

Delaware state parks and beaches are well maintained and awesome – you can go suntan by either the bay or down in southern Delaware along the ocean in beach towns like Dewey and Rehoboth. Also a 2-2.5 hour drive are many Jersey Beaches (going “down the shore” to PA locals)

Newark restaurant week, Wine & Dine in March, Food & Brew in the summer, 5K and 10K races

We have a bunch of wineries close by in MD and in PA, and Paradocx even does a wine 5K! (my lab is planning a tacos and margaritas 5K team for May)

Some grad students enjoy not running with alcohol and prefer tailgates of the UD football games

One example of our state parks and outdoor activities is our group hangout to watch the sunset at the reservoir, as well as hiking in White Clay Creek, Lums Pond, Brandywine, and more

Lums pond has a high ropes and zipline course through the trees

Tons of local breweries, including Dogfish Head!

Colburn Club Outreach

Partner with the 6^th graders at a middle school in Newark

Weekly algebra tutoring (fractions, patterns, basic algebra) to improve problem solving confidence
Monthly science demos related to the 6^th grade curriculum (chemical reactions, force and motion, space, Earth science, and many more!)

Participate in the Philadelphia Science Carnival annually

Run a series of activities that introduce the biology, catalysis, and materials research we do to a broad audience of parents and children
Additionally showcase these activities at a local Boys & Girls Club

Since 1994, a teaching fellows program administered by the University of Delaware's Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering has been offering advanced graduate students a hands-on teaching experience with the goal of helping them excel in their future role as engineering faculty at the university level.

Originally funded by a grant from the DuPont Company, in 1999 an endowment was established as the Shirley and Fraser Russell Teaching Fellowship by UD professor of chemical engineering T.W. Fraser Russell as a memorial to his wife, who was a secondary math teacher. The fellowship supports one graduate student per year at the University of Delaware and one at the University of Alberta, Russell's alma mater. Both institutions have supported two to three additional fellows each year with department funds.

"I believe this program is unique at UD, and nearly unique across higher education," observed Russell. "Many graduate applicants have told us they were attracted to UD's chemical engineering program specifically because of the teaching fellowship.“

Fellows co-teach an undergraduate course with a faculty mentor for one semester, and are involved in all aspects of the course -- lecturing, preparation of new material, grading, etc. Russell personally attends many of the fellows' lectures, providing guidance and feedback.

The EmPOWER Mission

What does EmPOWER do?

All first-year students are assigned a mentor who will check in periodically and keep them informed of resources they may need

EmPOWER also serves older grad students through our events and workshops

Includes de-stressing events both on and off campus (coffee hours, trips around Newark) and workshops to address student concerns (ex. stress management)

Strive to break the stigma associated with mental health both within the department and across

Encourage open dialogue on grad student well-being with students AND faculty

EmPOWER offers readily-accessible resources for students seeking a support network both from our group and from other departments on campus if we cannot meet your needs!

The EmPOWER Mission

Why do we have EmPOWER?

Grad school is HARD. It’s normal to struggle—whether it’s experimental woes, core class blues, stress and time management issues, loneliness, or advisor/peer conflicts

Who are we?

Empathetic Peers Offering Wisdom, Encouragement and Resources

Low-barrier peer-support group and faculty/staff mentors trained in topics such as active listening and recognizing warning signs of mental health crises

In 2019 EmPOWER was expanded from just the CBE department to the whole College of Engineering!
