Optimising Teacher Workload and Meeting Student Needs Through Collaborative PLCs
“Teachers are leaving because there is no end to their day! The expectation to work outside of their work hours, invades their own private lives. Teachers don’t have a chance to be the partner, parent, or focus on themselves because it is publicly & professionally ‘expected’ that they will work at home. They come to school with an empty love tank - and it’s not being filled….What should we be doing? The answer is quite simple, we (schools) need to become more efficient and lead better efficiencies.
- Campbell McKay (MWPS Principal)

The past…
Challenges |
- People working in isolation (one person creating the Mathematics Planner) |
- Teachers not sharing knowledge (graduates weren’t learning as much as they could be) |
- Teachers not discussing formative assessment and therefore not meeting children at their point of need |
- Teachers taking work home (due to a lack of collaboration teachers were stressed having to learn and plan aspects of the curriculum) |
- Arguments between teachers because planners have been changed |
- Disagreements about approaches and/or delivery |
Teacher self-efficacy
“I don’t want to teach Grade 6.”
“The curriculum is too hard in Grade 6.”
“I don’t even understand A how would I be able to teach B?”
Teacher self-efficacy
“I don’t want to teach Grade 6.”
“The curriculum is too hard in Grade 6.”
“I don’t even understand A how would I be able to teach B?”
Collaborative PLCs help teachers build MCK and (as a byproduct) self-efficacy because teachers feel supported
