My covenants show my willingness to obey God’s law

SCRIPTURE

3 And Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD, and all the judgments: and all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which the LORD hath said will we do.

4 And Moses wrote all the words of the LORD, and rose up early in the morning, and builded an altar under the hill, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel.

5 And he sent young men of the children of Israel, which offered burnt offerings, and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen unto the LORD.

6 And Moses took half of the blood, and put it in basins; and half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar.

7 And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the LORD hath said will we do, and be obedient.

My covenants show my willingness to obey God’s law

Dallin H. Oaks

Of the First Presidency

The love of God does not supersede His laws and His commandments, and the effect of God’s laws and commandments does not diminish the purpose and effect of His love…God’s love for His children is an eternal reality, but why does He love us so much, and why do we desire that love? The answer is found in the relationship between God’s love and His laws.

Some seem to value God’s love because of their hope that His love is so great and so unconditional that it will mercifully excuse them from obeying His laws. In contrast, those who understand God’s plan for His children know that God’s laws are invariable, which is another great evidence of His love for His children. Mercy cannot rob justice, and those who obtain mercy are “they who have kept the covenant and observed the commandment”…God’s love is so perfect that He lovingly requires us to obey His commandments because He knows that only through obedience to His laws can we become perfect, as He is. For this reason, God’s anger and His wrath are not a contradiction of His love but an evidence of His love.

I Will Be Valiant(Children’s Songbook #162)

MUSIC

The Lord needs valiant servants,

To do his work in the latter day,

Who follow the teachings of Jesus

And serve his people in a loving way.

I will be his servant

And keep my cov'nants valiantly.

I'll stand for truth. I'll stand for right.

The Lord can depend on me.

We honor the Sabbath as a sign of our commitment to the Lord

We honor the Sabbath as a sign of our commitment to the Lord

SCRIPTURE

12 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

13 Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you.

15 Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD…

16 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.

17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.

- Exodus 31:12-13,15-17

We honor the Sabbath as a sign of our commitment to the Lord

James E. Faust

Former Member of the First Presidency

The Sabbath was referred to in the Old Testament days as a blessed and hallowed day, as a symbol of a perpetual covenant of faithfulness, as a holy convocation, as a day of spiritual celebration… It has to do with obedience to commandments as an expression of our love for God. Blessed are those who need no reasons other than their love for the Savior to keep his commandments…

In our time God has recognized our intelligence by not requiring endless restrictions. Perhaps this was done with a hope that we would catch more of the spirit of Sabbath worship rather than the letter thereof…What is worthy or unworthy on the Sabbath day will have to be judged by each of us by trying to be honest with the Lord. On the Sabbath day we should do what we have to do and what we ought to do in an attitude of worshipfulness and then limit our other activities.

The Things I Do(Children’s Songbook #170)

MUSIC

1. I’m much too young to go abroad

To teach and preach the word of God,

But I can show I know it’s true,

Quite simply, by the things I do.

2. The people in my neighborhood

Will judge the gospel bad or good

By how I act at work and play,

And not just on the Sabbath day.

Music: Vanja Y. Watkins, b. 1938. © 1975 IRI

3. I’ll take my friends to church with me,

Where I will act with dignity.

My rev’rence and my happy face

Will tell them it’s a sacred place.

4. In ev’rything I do they’ll see

I am what I profess to be.

Then when the elders find their door,

they’ll say, “Come in and tell us more.”

I can put the Lord first in my life

I can put the Lord first in my life

SCRIPTURE

2 And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.

4 And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

7 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves:

8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

I can put the Lord first in my life

Rex C. Reeve

Former Member of the Seventy

[I]n the day of judgment the question won’t be so much what did you do or where did you serve, but rather, did you serve me with all your heart? Did you put me first in your life? Yes, real worship is of the heart. If men and nations did reach up to God with all their hearts, war would cease. If love of God were in the heart, a man would have no desire to destroy his brother.

There would be no dishonesty if the love of God were in the heart. If God came first in his life, a man would love his neighbor as himself, and instead of taking from him, he would feel to give to him…Yes, the answer and solution to all the challenges and needs we have, national or personal, is to turn our hearts to God, put Him first in our lives, keep His commandments—and all things will work for our good, even those tests which seem so big and require so much. They, too, will bless our lives. We should look to God; put Him first in our lives and especially in our hearts.

Seek the Lord Early(Children’s Songbook #108)

MUSIC

I’ll seek the Lord early while in my youth,

And he will help me to know the truth.

I’ll search the scriptures and find him there,

Then go to our Father in fervent prayer.

I’ll seek the Lord early, and I’ll obey

His living prophets in all they say.

I’ll keep his commandments; his love will abound.

I will seek the Lord early, and he will be found.

I can stand for righteousness

SCRIPTURE

21 And Moses said unto Aaron, What did this people unto thee, that thou hast brought so great a sin upon them?

22 And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that they are set on mischief.

23 For they said unto me, Make us gods, which shall go before us: for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

24 And I said unto them, Whosoever hath any gold, let them break it off. So they gave it me: then I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.

I can stand for righteousness

Lynn G. Robbins

Former Member of the Presidency of the Seventy

Courage is not just one of the cardinal virtues, but as C. S. Lewis observed: “Courage is…the form of every virtue at the testing point”… To appease rebellious Israel at the foot of Mount Sinai, Aaron crafted a golden calf, forgetting which way he faced.

The Savior, the only perfect being who ever lived, was the most fearless. In His life, He was confronted by scores of accusers but never yielded to their finger of scorn. He is the only person who never once forgot which way He faced…

May His inspiring example strengthen us against the pitfalls of flattery from without or of conceit from within. May it give us courage to never cower or fawn at the feet of intimidation. May it inspire us to go about doing good as anonymously as possible and not “aspire to the honors of men”… may we always remember whose disciples we are, and which way we face.

Sin is turning away from God, but He offers a way back

SCRIPTURE

9-10 And the Lord said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people: Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation.

14 (JST) And the Lord said unto Moses, If they will repent of the evil which they have done, I will spare them, and turn away my fierce wrath; but, behold, thou shalt execute judgment upon all that will not repent of this evil this day. Therefore, see thou do this thing that I have commanded thee, or I will execute all that which I had thought to do unto my people.

26 Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD’s side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him…

29 For Moses had said, Consecrate yourselves to day to the LORD, even every man upon his son, and upon his brother; that he may bestow upon you a blessing this day.

Sin is turning away from God, but He offers a way back

Neil L. Andersen

Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

When we sin, we turn away from God. When we repent, we turn back toward God. The invitation to repent is rarely a voice of chastisement but rather a loving appeal to turn around and to “re-turn” toward God. It is the beckoning of a loving Father and His Only Begotten Son to be more than we are, to reach up to a higher way of life, to change, and to feel the happiness of keeping the commandments. Being disciples of Christ, we rejoice in the blessing of repenting and the joy of being forgiven. They become part of us, shaping the way we think and feel.

…What a marvelous privilege for each of us to turn away from our sins and to come unto Christ. Divine forgiveness is one of the sweetest fruits of the gospel, removing guilt and pain from our hearts and replacing them with joy and peace of conscience…He loves us. We are members of His Church. He invites each of us to repent, turn away from our sins, and come unto Him.

- Elder Neil L. Andersen, “‘Repent…That I May Heal You’,” General Conference, October 2009

Choose the Right Way(Children’s Songbook #160)

MUSIC

1. There's a right way to live and be happy;

It is choosing the right ev'ry day.

I am learning the teachings of Jesus;

They will help me and show me the way.

2. Through the gospel I learn to be prayerful,

To have faith, to repent, to obey,

And I know if I live by his teachings,

I will truly be happy each day.

We need God’s presence in our lives

SCRIPTURE

11 And the Lord spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. […]

12 And Moses said unto the LORD, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight.

13 Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people.

14 And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.

We need God’s presence in our lives

Susan H. Porter

Member of the Primary General Presidency

When you know and understand how completely you are loved as a child of God, it changes everything. It changes the way you feel about yourself when you make mistakes. It changes how you feel when difficult things happen. It changes your view of God’s commandments. It changes your view of others and of your capacity to make a difference…

Sometimes we mistakenly think that we can feel God’s love only after we have followed the iron rod and partaken of the fruit. God’s love, however, not only is received by those who come to the tree but is the very power that motivates us to seek that tree…God’s love is not found in the circumstances of our lives but in His presence in our lives. We know of His love when we receive strength beyond our own and when His Spirit brings peace, comfort, and direction. At times it may be difficult to feel His love. We can pray to have our eyes opened to see His hand in our lives and to see His love in the beauty of His creations.

If the Savior Stood Beside Me(Children’s Friend )

MUSIC

1. If the Savior stood beside me, would I do the things I do?

Would I think of His commandments, and try harder to be true?

Would I follow His example? Would I live more righteously

if I could see the Savior standing nigh, watching over me?

2. If the Savior stood beside me, would I say the things I say?

Would my words be true and kind if He was never far away?

Would I try to share the gospel? Would I speak more rev’rently

if I could see the Savior standing nigh, watching over me?

3. He is always near me, though I do not see Him there,

And because He loves me dearly, I am in His watchful care.

So I’ll be the kind of person that I know I’d like to be

if I could see the Savior standing nigh, watching over me.
