Likely/ME gusta ~2: These are colleges you have an excellent chance of getting into and you think you can afford. They should be colleges you would be happy to attend.

Target / Creo que me conviene.2-4: These are colleges with stats that match your academic record and test scores (if you have them).

Cuando aplicar?/Time to Apply

  • Decision regular Enero 1/REGULAR DECISION - Students submit an application (usually by January 1) and receive a decision around March.

  • Accion temprana? EARLY ACTION (Priority) - Apply early and receive a decision before the regular response date. The majority of applicants are accepted through EA (over 90% at UMD College Park). Often only EA applicants are considered for merit aid. Due dates typically Nov 1 or 15. Public colleges.

  • Admission moviendose? ROLLING ADMISSION - Applications are reviewed as they are submitted and admission decisions are sent throughout the admissions cycle, earlier is better.

Restrictive Application Plan:

  • Decision temprana/EARLY DECISION binding – El estudiante aplica y si admite tiene que asistir a esa universidad .Students apply to their first choice college and if admitted, they must enroll. Deadline is typically November 1 and decisions come in December. Counselor and parent must sign off and students must withdraw all other applications if they are accepted. Private colleges.

Use the “Golden Ticket” to request transcripts for your applications in September. Counselors will add your schools to “Colleges I’m applying to.” Indicate your application due dates in Naviance.

Click on “Colleges” (top right)

Click on “Apply to College”

Counselors will write letters once the Brag Sheet is complete and transcript request has been made

Email or ask your teacher in person if they will write you a letter BEFORE you request in Naviance

Click on “Letters of Recommendation” then “Add Request” and select a teacher from the drop down, you must designate each colleges from list (not all!)

Standardized Test Scores

Test scores are sent directly to colleges from the College Board (SAT) or ACT. If you do not select your schools when you register for the test, you will be charged $15 to send scores to each school (unless you have fee waiver)

Most schools will be test optional again next year. Discuss if you should send your score with your counselor or Ms. Kessler.

Only send if they are at or above the school’s average.

How are Applications Evaluated?

Holistic Review:

Flexible, individualized process where balanced consideration is given to the multiple ways in which applicants may prepare for and demonstrate suitability as students at an institution (College Board).

Considerations:

  • How has the student challenged themself inside and outside of the classroom?
  • What obstacles has the student faced?
  • How will the student contribute to the community at our school?

FAFSA/FAFSA (APLICACIÓN GRATIS DEL GOBIERNO FEDERAL)Free Application for Federal Student Aid) opens October 1st

  • Create a Federal Student Aid ID @ studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa

Students and one parent need to create a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID

  • Enter the list of schools you are applying to
  • Gather Financial Documents
    • Social Security Number
    • Alien Registration Number (for non-US citizens)
    • Federal income tax returns (2020)
    • W-2’s
    • Bank Statements
    • Records of any untaxed income
  • Start the FAFSA for the year 2025-2026

FAFSA applications are processed within 3-5 days. Once processed you will receive a copy of your student aid report which includes expected family contribution which determines your eligibility for Pell Grants (~$6,500 a year)

The MSFAA is for non-citizens and green card holders.
