Root Causes

3 of 24

It was very difficult for my 7th grade students to use the slide deck so I did the activity on a piece of butcher paper with sticky notes. This provided more flexibility to them.

I turned this into a digital version* (the next slide).

* The language is from the students. The layout was revised by IACP to better illustrate how the placement and links should show the interconnections between items.

How can we address poor nutrition at BMS?

Problem Statement: Poor School Lunches

Step 1: So What?

Consequences / Symptoms

  1. Consider the consequence of your problem.
  2. Write one consequence on a sticky note, and drag to a branch.
  3. As a team, ask and discuss “So What?”, and add that answer to another sticky and drag it onto the same branch.
  4. Continue, and try to fill 2-3 branches.

Step 2: Why?

Root Causes

  • Consider the IMMEDIATE causes of the problem
  • Write one cause on a sticky note, and drag to a root stem.
  • As a team, ask and discuss ”WHY” that cause occurred, and add that answer to another sticky and drag it onto the same root stem.
  • Continue, noting where causes diverge and converge.

They don’t put the time and effort into the lunch.

They don’t eat it.

The food is frozen and you can just bake it

Budget is too low.

They use the money for something else.

Maybe our school can’t afford many good lunches for a whole school.

They try to make it healthy, but it just ruins it. The district also wants to make it cheap.

We don’t have enough money for quality food.

The food doesn’t have good nutrition value.

Bad activity

Youre hungry the whole day.

People stop eating.

For people wil P.E. after lunch there's a chance of passing out.

Your stomach will start hurting.

The food is bad.

after lunch they won’t be able to focus.

Hungry children, tried children, loud children, calls from parents.

People might get food poisoning or just feel sick to their stomach.

They don’t eat it, so they might eat someone elses lunch

We don’t eat-we could waste the food

food all over campos.

Lack in nutrients which will cause us to be tired during classes.

Some people feel nauseous if they don’t eat enough.

Students can’t work well without the right food.

We have poor nutrition

Why? - Causes in the roots

So What? - Consequences in the branches

: dry, no flavor, what’s, apple is good at least,

Juliana: greasy looking, it’s okay, cheese is very solid, it is not cheesy, chocolate milk is the best part of this meal, apple is better than I expected,

Kalra: brought my own lunch- PBJ, black berries, strawberries, I made my own lunch

Zack: cheese is so solid, no utensil, I would eat the apple sauce if i had utensil. Ate chips instead.

Valeria: sandwich was okay. Some people ate it without ketchup. It was better with ketchup. ❤❤❤
