So Why ARE SeaWater Lubricated Shaftlines Better than OIL lubricated one?

The first thing to know about an open seawater lubricated shaftline is that it is technically equivalent to a sealed oil lubricated system and the Class Societies have acknowledged as much providing extended shaft withdrawal notations for open seawater lubricated shaftlines comparable to oil. Many large commercial ships equipped with Thordon seawater lubricated propeller shaft bearings have never had a shaft withdrawal in over 20 years!

The EEDI is improved as the seawater lubricated system with a Thordon polymer bearing offers a lower coefficient of friction than oil meaning a reduced power requirement. And new sterntube-less designs offer increased cargo capacity meaning reduced C02 emissions per capacity tonne mile.
