Here’s an overview of how the capacity utilization works for Dell APEX Data Storage Services.

You will start by selecting a base capacity, which is a minimum amount of storage commitment. All deployments include an additional buffer, which is available for

incremental growth, ensuring you don’t run out of available capacity. The buffer is typically just over 40% of the base capacity commitment. Utilization of the buffer capacity is considered on-demand usage, and you pay a single rate for both base capacity and on-demand usage with no overage penalties. In addition to the roughly 40% buffer, there is an additional buffer capacity cushion to ensure performance service levels are met. We discourage utilization of the capacity in the cushion and will not bill for accessing that capacity.

As usage takes place, it may go much higher than base capacity. If you utilize a significant portion of the buffer and anticipate continued growth, an expansion may be necessary – as we see here in this example.

You have the option to raise your base capacity, which may result in a lower overall rate. If you raise the base capacity commitment, the buffer and corresponding cushion are increased accordingly. This enables continual growth and the ability to accommodate unanticipated bursts in capacity utilization.

With Dell-managed, you maintain operational control of workloads and applications while Dell manages and maintains the on-premises infrastructure, taking on the responsibilities of daily administrative tasks and operations oversight.
