Demographic Transition Model

Historically, nations that have gone through similar processes of economic development have experienced similar patterns of population growth. Scientists who studied the population growth patterns of European countries in the early 1900s described a four-phase process they referred to as a demographic transition. The theory of demographic transition says that as a country moves from a subsistence economy to industrialization and increased affluence, it undergoes a predictable shift in population growth. The theory helps us to understand the way some come countries will influence the environment as they undergo growth and development (Friedland, et al. 2012).

Phase 1

  • Preindustrial/slow or zero population growth
  • High birth rate counterbalanced by high death rate.
  • All or the vast majority of populations are no longer in phase 1 (however subsistence communities are arguably in phase 1)

14 of 19

Phase 2

  • Transitional/exponential population growth
  • Death rates decline. Why?
  • Birth rate is slow to decline because large families are economically important as a source of labor or income.
  • High population growth

Phase 3

  • Industrial/stable population growth
  • Education and economy improve
  • As income improves, families have fewer children, birth rates decline (access to birth control, more women in the workforce, more education for women)
  • Population growth levels off

Phase 4

  • Postindustrial/declining population growth
  • Higher level of affluence and economic development
  • Fewer young people and higher proportion of elderly people
  • Population declines
  • What are some of the issues associated with a population like this?
