Problem:

  1. Coconut shells are being dumped in large numbers in the coastal areas.
  2. No cheap and eco-friendly absorbent is present to protect grain from moisture and other biotics while storing them longer.
  • To produce Activated carbon from coconut shells by economical process.
  • To test the absorbing capacity of activated carbon while storing grains, moisture retention ability, and other methods that can be used by farmers for sustainable agriculture practices.

Objective:

Why Activated Carbon?

  • Activated carbon is one of the most effective odor-absorbing materials due to its huge surface area, and porous structure.
  • It also protects from bacteria, germs, allergens, air-borne chemicals, toxins, odor, and micro-pollutants.
  • Can be used to absorb moisture while storing food grains for longer periods.
  • Can be useful in retaining water in areas where water scarcity is there which will help in agriculture.
  • Farmers can produce it on a small scale and sell it to other sectors for its potential use which can generate income.
