Children are naturally curious and science supports the development of a child’s curiosity, helping them to investigate problems, learn more about the world around them and understand and use scientific explanations for a wide range of phenomena.

Scientific enquiry is about considering ideas, evaluating evidence, planning investigative work and recording and analysing data. The Scientific enquiry objectives underpin Biology, Chemistry and Physics, which are focused on developing confidence and interest in scientific knowledge, including environmental awareness and history of science.

Semester 1

Learning Intentions

  • Understand that all organisms are made of cells, identify and describe the functions of cell structures and explain how the structures of some specialised cells are related to their functions.
  • Understand that all matter is made of atoms, with each different type of atom being a different element represented in the periodic table grouped into metals and non metals.
  • Describe the three states of matter in terms of arrangement, separation and motion of particles and by use the particle model to represent elements, compounds and mixtures.
  • Describe the seven characteristics of living organisms and discuss reasons to classify viruses as living or non living.
  • Describe a species as a group of organisms that can reproduce to produce fertile offspring by using dichotomous keys to classify them.
  • Describe the changes in energy that result of an event or process knowing that energy tends to dissipate becoming less useful.

Semester 2

Learning Intentions

  • Construct and interpret food chains and webs that include and describe the ecological role of microorganisms as decomposers.
  • Understand that all substances have physical and chemical properties such as acidity and alkalinity measured by pH and that you can use indicators to distinguish between them.
  • Identify whether a chemical reaction has taken place through observation and explain why a precipitate forms in terms of a chemical reaction between soluble reactants forming at least one insoluble product by using the particle model.Describe the changes in energy that result of an event or process knowing that energy tends to dissipate becoming less useful.
  • Use a simple model to describle electricity as a flow of electrons around a circuit which include electrical conductors and inhibitors by using diagrams and conventional symbols to represent, make and compare circuits being able to describe how adding components affects the current and measuring it.
  • Describe the model of plate tectonics, in which a solid outer layer (made up of the crust and uppermost mantle) moves because of flow lower in the mantle.
  • Describe how planets form from dust and gas pulled together by gravity and that this force holds the components of the solar system in orbit around the sun and affects the tidal forces on earth.
