Priti Mehta is the second child and eldest daughter of Kabir and Mitra Mehta, an Indian merchant and his wife. Their family was wealthy and well-respected within their community. The love that they shared for each other was deep. They were the family that everyone wanted to be. Until they weren’t. When Priti was four years old, her younger sister was born but what should have been a time of celebration morphed into a time of mourning when her mother died due to illness. This quickly changed the Mehta family from the family everyone envied to the one they all pitied. Priti barely remembers the time when her mother was alive but she was old enough to remember the shift that happened when she was gone. Growing up without her mother was difficult but her older brother, Nikhil, made sure to take care of her and their younger sister, Kalini, whenever their father had to be absent for work. Due to the role Nikhil took on in their family, the bond that Priti shared with him and Kalini was special and strong. When she was ten years old, she found an older girl, one the same age as her older brother, who took Priti under her wing. The girl, Chaitali, became Priti’s closest friend and confidant. She taught her how to cook her favourite dishes and how to do the gorgeous mehndi that adorned their bodies during celebrations. In return, Priti taught Chaitali how to ride the horses that she loved so dearly. When she got older, Priti took any chance she could to suggest that her friend and her brother should become closer, whether it was actually going to happen or not. As time passed and the Mehta family healed from their tragedy, they rebuilt the reputation they once had and soon, Nikhil and Priti became the marriage market’s top prizes. However, Nikhil had other ambitions, ones that set their sights on England. Excited to see what the English marriage market had to offer, Priti eagerly agreed to go with him, the prospect of finding a European husband being too good to pass up.

Personality

Priti is a girl of few opinions. Don’t let that fool you, though. When she does express her opinions out loud, she makes sure everyone knows her stance and that it isn’t changing. She just usually prefers to follow her father’s teaching of keeping her thoughts to herself. This does change depending on the company she’s in. Around men, she’s more likely to stay off to the side and watch, making observations for herself and going along with the more generally accepted opinion. In the company of women, however, she’s more vocal and openly expresses her opinion more. Priti is a creative-minded individual, a trait which is often nurtured by her love for mehndi and doing designs of her own creation on both herself and others. She is a loyal friend and family member who trusts easily in hopes that it will make it easier for those around her to trust her in return, even though it might make her naive. Her family is the most important thing to her and to her, a blow to one of them is a blow to her. This also goes for her closest friends. Biography

Finch is the youngest, and often forgotten, son of Percival and Edith Ridlington. His father is a well-respected general and his mother, the daughter of a judge. Their family’s estate lies on land that had been gifted to Percival and Edith by her parents when they got married. As the youngest son, Finch was able to fly under the radar for most of his childhood. This was both an advantage and a disadvantage. He was able to do whatever he wanted and no one of importance would bat an eye but he often felt neglected by his parents. Finch is a musician, a harpist, but often had no one except his sisters and their staff to hear him play because his father was always away at war, his brothers deemed him too young to be worth their company and his mother just didn’t care. That is, until she had guests over and wanted to brag about what an accomplished musician her third son was. Then she wanted him to play his entire repertoire and make sure all of her friends heard her praise him. One by one, his older siblings made their societal debuts and with each debut came a new level of excitement in the home. An excitement that Finch never understood. Marriage wasn’t something he looked forward to. He had once attempted to discuss the option of him not getting married with his mother but she wouldn’t entertain the notion, establishing that it was expected of him. When his sister Dorothea made her debut, Finch knew that he would be next and he dreaded it. He finally made his debut during the previous social season and while it meant that he was a step closer to marriage, it also meant that his mother paid a little more attention to him than she had the rest of his life. Though it was mostly through making sure that he always looked presentable when out in society and that all the women he spoke to were up to her standards. There was one woman who passed his mother’s scrutiny and Finch got closer to her outside of the social season. However, the two of them ended things before it became serious, leaving him open for the upcoming social season.

Finch is a very social person. As a child, due to his parents often leaving him to his own devices, he developed the ability to make friends and converse with just about anyone as a defense mechanism against loneliness. He trusts easily and will quickly establish with people he meets that they can depend on him. However, he has a tendency to put others before himself, no matter the personal outcome. Music is his passion but he won’t play a piece for anyone until he’s 100% satisfied with it and knows he won’t mess up while playing. This always meant practicing until his fingers were raw and it hurt to continue touching the strings of his harp. Despite his father’s best attempts to rid him of the quality, Finch is an empathetic person. Often mistakenly interpreted as sensitivity, Finch has a tendency to mirror the emotions of the people around him and the desire to not upset people is more often than not what causes him to put the needs of others in front of his own. Finch is a relatively calm person and while it takes a lot for him to get angry, he does get frustrated easily. The main trigger for his frustration is when a harp piece isn’t going the way he wants but it can also be triggered by people every now and again. Mostly when he thinks that there is a better way for something to be done that no one else seems to be thinking of.

Theodore Yichen Radcliffe is the eldest son and heir of Edwin Radcliffe and his wife, Daiyu. His father, who had inherited his title from his late father, is a proprietor and owns several institutions across town, the most notable being a shop that sells imported goods, particularly those from China. As a child, Theodore often found himself travelling between China and England, partially for his father’s business and to visit his mother’s family. It was an insistence of hers that they travel to her home at least once a year. His younger brother, Jasper, was actually born during one of those visits. When he and his twin sister, Kitty, were 10 years old, they both fell gravely ill. Theodore beat the illness faster than his twin, who made a recovery that one could consider miraculous after the family had begun to prepare themselves for the worst. After this happened, their family dynamic had changed. Having come close to losing his heir, Edwin rarely let Theodore out of his sight and he decided it was time to start preparing him for the role he would eventually assume. When he deemed him to be ready, he started involving Theodore in the business side of their trips to China, which he actually grew to love. He became more and more involved as he got older, starting to make his own independent journeys to his father’s colleagues in his mother’s home country and eventually making some colleagues of his own. He also took up Chinese martial arts, courtesy of a colleague of his. He heard through letters when his sister Helena, the eldest in their family, made her societal debut and again two years later when Kitty made hers. The next time he was home after that announcement, his mother very strongly suggested that Teddy should begin searching for a wife of his own. He agreed, on the condition that he would be allowed to return to China to tie up some loose end and then join the following season. A year has now passed and he has returned home to fulfill his promise to his mother.

Personality

At his core, Theodore is a businessman. He keeps himself and his space organized and ensures that everyone, even people he’s known for mere seconds, know they can count on him for just about anything. He's also confident and well-spoken, in more than one language. He gets to know people and gains their trust and confidence in him. Theodore is an organized individual but he’s also a perfectionist which can come as a blessing and a curse. On one hand, it leads him to ensure there are no mistakes in his business interactions because he ensures everything is to his standards before it is seen by other people but can also cause him to come off as controlling to people who don’t know him well. Ironically, as much as he wants people to know they can trust him, he has a hard time trusting other people and often expects the worst from them. To earn his trust is a task which is not easily accomplished and once that trust is broken, it’s extremely difficult to earn back. Theodore has a tendency to treat his emotions as undesirable. He holds them back, believing that show others those emotions will lead him to being perceived as weak, a perception he already suspects people of having due to his childhood illness. His family, especially his twin, is important to him. Having almost lost Kitty when they were younger, he feels a sense of protectiveness towards her and will write letters to her frequently when he is away to make sure she is okay.
