Plagiarism
5th Grade ELA
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is using some or all of somebody’s work or idea and saying that you created it.
Citation
A citation is a formal note of credit to an author that includes their name, date published, and where you found the information.
Types of Citations
There are many different formats and types of citations, depending on where you got the information, but the important part is to give enough information so that another person can find your original source.
A commonly used format is called MLA, which has different types of citations for each media, e.g. books and webpages are cited differently.
Example Citation
When you use information from a webpage in a paper, you can use the following format to cite the source:
Last, First M. “Article Title.” Website Title. Website Publisher, Date Month Year Published. Web. Date Month Year Accessed.
Example:
Lovelace, Ada. “How to Code.” Geek Girl Blog. Geek Girl Media, 01/02/2013. Web. 04/05/2016.
Bibliography Tools
Rather than trying to remember all the different citation formats, you can use a bibliography tool like EasyBib or Cite This For Me.
Just make sure to check that the citation is correct!
