Essential Mathematics!

The DEMI assessment is not a traditional comprehensive math assessment. Rather it was developed around essential mathematics by grade span to help measure what students know, to see how students apply essential mathematics, and capture how students communicate their reasoning about essential mathematics.

This unique math assessment is asset-based and every question item is constructed response. This is by design to capture how students broadly problem solve and make sense within a context and also to capture the diverse ways that students communicate mathematically.

The DEMI was also designed to offer data that is formative in the classroom, within a PLC, at a site, level, and also district wide. As the DEMI is offered twice a year, this optional assessment also is powerful for monitoring progress at multiple levels and capture learning and growth over time.

Any site can optionally access the Demi Assessments and they are administered on the Illuminate Platform

It is a short and fun assessment that includes 5 - 12 math items and includes an adapted jo boaler mindset survey

Adn the assessment is about 20-40 minutes in length and can administered syn or async

The DEMI isn’t tied to any curriculum or pacing

Ideas for Quarter System Administration

Administer the DEMI site-wide: Identify a time (for example: period 1) and have all teachers of that period assign the DEMI asynchronously via Illuminate, regardless of what content they teach. This site-wide approach will yield site-wide data and is best followed up in the Spring administration of the DEMI with another site-wide administration. This will offer formative and actionable data in both administrations.
Administer the DEMI in math classes: A subset of students will be assessed in the fall window and a subset of students will be assessed in the spring window. Some of those students will be captured twice and some will only be assessed once. This will give your teachers and your site leadership a snapshot of where your students (as a body) are in the fall and spring. For teachers administering the DEMI, formative and actionable data will result in both administrations.
Administer the DEMI with only interested math teachers: If you have a small group of individual math teachers interested in this work, they are invited to administer the DEMI this quarter and in the Spring. This data may not be administered in the fall and in the spring w/ the same set of students, however it will still yield professional learning and formative feedback in both administrations.

This untraditional assessment has all constructed response question items that fall into three categories: Knowledge, Application, and Communication. ��After the DEMI window closes, our SDUSD Math Leadership Team and the Data & Assessment Team at central office reviews and validates student responses for all Knowledge and Application items by Oct. 16th.

For Communication responses (there are two on each DEMI), our joint teams offers Professional Learning and support to score and also analyze the DEMI data.

The DEMI is a district-wide assessment that does not affect your child’s grade. Instead, it helps your child’s teacher gain insights into how your child solves math problems in context and communicates his/her/their reasoning in writing. This isn’t a test about speed or memorization. Your child will take another DEMI in the Spring and we look forward to seeing how much your child has grown!
