STARTER ACTIVITY
What is a mixture?
Would you consider milk a mixture? Why or why not?
UNIT 3: MIXTURES
Lesson 1: Classifying Mixtures
By the end of this lesson you must be able to:
MIXTURES
Mixtures contain two or more different types of matter.
HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURES
Heterogeneous mixtures contain different ingredients that are visibly seen.
Heterogenous Mixture #1 MECHANICAL MIXTURE
Ones you can physically separate
Heterogeneous Mixture #2
SUSPENSIONS
A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture in which the LARGE particles settle slowly after mixing.
When a mixture is shaken the individual parts become difficult to identify from the entire mixture.
Example: Italian Dressing
Heterogeneous Mixture #3 EMULSIONS
Paint is a good example of an emulsion (over time it will separate)
Examples of Emulsions
RESEARCH: Emulsifying AGENT
HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURES
Pure substances = every single particle is the exact same thing. Example: Gold, oxygen, chlorine, etc
Homogeneous Mixture = COMPOSED of two or more substances but appear to be same throughout (ex: salt water) = SOLUTIONS
REINFORCEMENT
DO Heterogeneous or Homogeneous WORKSHEET
