PICO Question
- Among veterans prescribed Juven for wound healing, what is the rate of compliance (defined as consuming the supplement as prescribed and completing a 30-day RDN follow-up) compared to non-compliance?
Introduction
- Chronic wounds affect approximately 6.5 million people annually, costing the U.S. healthcare system over $25 billion.1
- These wounds often stall in the inflammatory stage, increasing the risk of infection, sepsis, and amputation.2
- At the Memphis VA, specialized nutrition is a critical component of the wound care protocol.
Objective
- At the Memphis VA, Juven is strictly indicated only for patients with Stage 2 or greater pressure injuries
- Clinical data from the manufacturer indicates that veterans with other chronic wounds, including diabetic foot ulcers, surgical wounds, and venous ulcers, can also achieve improved healing outcomes with this targeted supplementation.4
- This project evaluates compliance within current protocols to provide a data-driven justification for expanding Juven access to a broader veteran population.
Methodology
- A retrospective chart review was conducted using the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS).
- Data was collected in five-month intervals (April 2025 and September 2025) to capture longitudinal trends.
- A final data pull is scheduled for the conclusion of March 2026 to complete the one-year study period.

Prescription Overlap
Key Finding: 21 out of 31 veterans (68%) remained on the supplement for over 5 months, indicating a strong trend of extended use in this population.
Population Snapshot
- The initial cohort (n=39) consists primarily of male veterans (92.3%).
- The racial distribution is 56.4% Black or African American and 33.3% White.
- Over 40% of the subjects are aged 75 or older, representing a population at high risk for nutrient deficiencies and delayed healing.
Compliance Criteria
- Compliance is measured by two criteria: consistent supplement consumption and a 30-day follow-up with a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).
Conclusion
- Preliminary findings suggest that a significant portion of the veteran population requires long-term nutritional support rather than short-term intervention.
- Initial data indicates that 34% of veterans on the prescription lists were deceased during the review periods. This high mortality rate within the cohort could be a significant barrier to compliance and may contribute to variability in 30-day RDN follow-up completion"
- The study will conclude with a final data analysis following the March 2026 prescription list pull to determine the definitive annual compliance rate.

Nutrition Mechanism
- Juven is a wound-specific oral nutritional supplement (ONS) containing Arginine, Glutamine, Collagen protein, HMB, Zinc, and Vitamins C, E, and B12.4
- These nutrients are essential for collagen formation and skin integrity, helping to move chronic wounds out of the stalled inflammatory phase and into the proliferative phase of healing.3-4
