Introduction Paragraph:“Scarlet Ibis” Example

The relationships shared by brothers and sisters can often be very complicated. We sometimes have expectations for our siblings and are disappointed when these expectations aren’t met. This is the case in James Hurst’s story “The Scarlet Ibis.” When Brother’s little brother Doodle is born physically disabled, Brother is disappointed. All of his plans to teach Doodle his favorite activities were jeopardized when Doodle proved incapable of walking on his own. As he sets out to help his brother, Brother shows that he can both kind and cruel to Doodle.

These two sentences serve as the HOOK. The goal of the hook is to introduce the general topic of your essay and get your audience interested in reading what you’ve written. Besides introducing the general topic, you can also use a well-chosen quote or an anecdote (a brief story or situation that connects to the subject of your essay).

After your HOOK, you need to introduce the piece of literature that you are writing about. This must include the AUTHOR and TITLE. If the title is a short story or poem, use “quotation marks” around the title. For longer pieces of literature, like novels or plays, underline the titles.

After introducing the author and title, you need to CONNECT the story with your thesis. Think of this as a very short summary of the story, giving only the information that is necessary to make a case and/or connection for your thesis.

Your introduction paragraph should end with your THESIS statement. The thesis also acts a preview for the body of your essay. In the sample introduction paragraph it would be appropriate to write about Brother’s kindness before his acts of cruelty.
