Science is a verb!

Our work will be hands-on as much as possible. Through this, we can...

Science

Ask questions

Form hypotheses

Observe

Experiment

Analyze

Communicate

Our Goals

Students will build their skills and prepare for the next steps in their education:

  • Communication
  • Organization
  • Self Reliance
  • Ask Questions
  • Consider Cause and Effect

OpenSciEd Curriculum: Our third year

In class, we…

  • Observe and ask questions about Phenomena
  • Focus on HOW we figure out what is happening as much as what is actually happening
  • Are “ok” with not knowing or being inaccurate at first

8th Grade: Chemistry 7th Grade: Natural Hazards

7 of 21

We begin each unit with phenomena

Phenomenon: An observable event, such as when a cell phone collides with another object, sometimes shatters and sometimes doesn’t

How to support your student’s science learning at home

At home, ask your student(s)…

  • What they are learning about and how they figured out what they know
  • To explain how their ideas have changed over the course of the unit

Remind your student(s) that true understanding takes time.

Instead of answering questions, encourage wondering and questioning: I wonder if it has something to do with… or How could that work? or Tell me more about that idea.

Grades

Grading may look different this year. Since our focus is on the process of learning, rather than the final result in a specific amount of time, Ms. Carroll will be looking for students to meet academic expectations by the end of the unit. You may see “Not Yet” in Aspen, instead of a grade because the student’s learning is in progress, and they may need more experience with the materials before they “own” it.

What will be graded:

  • Writing prompts
  • Progress Trackers
  • Learning Checks (check-ins for learning with the ability to “fix” their work)
  • Notebook / Binder checks
  • Quizzes (1 - 2 per unit)
