New BVSD Literacy Adoption

  • Interactive Read-Aloud: Children engage in authentic discussion about texts. Books will spark inquiry-based learning.
  • Shared Reading: Children join us in reading a large-print book or chart aloud
  • Reading Mini lessons: Whole class lessons on topics of management, literary analysis, skills and strategies, and writing about reading.
  • Phonics, Spelling, and Word Study: Children are engaged in OG instruction grades K-2 and are integrating the new Fountas and Pinnell and Fundations programming. All K, 1, 2, 3, sped and 1 teacher at grades 4 and 5 having have been trained in this kinesthetic phonics program.
  • Guided Reading: A small group of children read a challenging text at their instructional level with the teacher.
  • Book Clubs: A small group of children choose a book to read and come together for a discussion that expands their thinking about texts.
  • Independent Reading: Students read texts of their choice independently, allowing them to enjoy books, practice the reading processes, and share their thinking about the books they are reading.

  • How do I support reading at home?
    • Make it a nightly ritual
    • Read to, with and by as a family
    • Expose students to multiple genres of reading
    • Provide time for your children to decode words
    • Ask what your child’s independent reading level is and provide plenty of “practice” time with this level
    • Help your child/ren discover a joy for reading!
