Goals

4. Report on two experiments exploring the potential of a new approach: “terminal salience”
5. Stimulate interest in conducting further experiments in alphabetics and alphanumerics
In remote viewing we start with basic sensory impressions
Many targets are real life scenes from which we get visuals and other sensory impressions which are often distorted, unclear, or not well defined
We are gifted with this ‘simple’ perceptual mechanism
We sense shapes and borders
textures and colors
But we find numbers hard
They seldom come parachuting down from a Great Airplane in the Sky…
Names are difficult
Even simple nouns can be difficult
Which is why this advice is widespread:��“Describe, don’t name”
“Matching the target”
In many remote viewing approaches, the viewer mention nouns (e.g. river, mountain).
Matching a target can occur at the Basic level (common) or at the Subordinate level (rare) in Embodied Mind theory.
Trials have been carried out by telephone communication and recorded on magnetic recording tape of a case of alleged telepathy between a mother and her son…The distance between the telephones has varied from 0.59 to 9.7 kilometres... Letters or numbers were presented to the mother and the replies of the son were recorded, as well as the mother’s remarks. Over 30% of the letters or numbers were guessed correctly the first time. Of the two possibilities that an unconscious code or telepathy is in operation, the writers incline to the view that it is a case of telepathy.

The remote viewer’s task: Sense and feel, calmly and clearly, being careful not to rush to judgment or conclusion, but to go on sensing.
Sense, listen and feel with your mind (write it down): sounds, syllables, words, knowings
If your mouth wants to speak, let it (write what you are hearing your mouth say). Try to articulate but stick with what feels correct - don’t embellish
Stick with what you are perceiving.
Too little is probably better than too much.
Better to get a few accurate sounds than to introduce AOL

“The results, shown in Table 1, provide evidence for successful alphabet reading… The overall probability of obtaining the number of correct guesses by chance exhibited in this series is less than 1 in 105 ( i.e., p <10-5). Therefore, this technique will be pursued as a training device in alphabet reading.”��Harold E. In the experiments with this subject, she was told to consider the alphabet reading to be the same as the remote viewing which she had already done excellently. Rather than try to guess what the letter was, she was asked to describe it as though it was a remote viewing target. She was asked to make a drawing and describe it in a non-analytic fashion. Someone else would then look at her drawings and description and make the final assessment as to what the letter was. She was specifically instructed not to guess the letter.

In the first experiment (between non-adjacent labs at SRI) she said that the letter was like a “J”, curvey at the bottom. "Or maybe it is a backwards ‘J’." Her drawings consisted of the two J's forward and backward, both with heavy markings at the bottom. Her final words on the tape were that “... It could be a ‘U’ but I don't think so.”
Hal Puthoff was given the subject-generated data and, on a blind basis, correctly identified the target letter as a “U”.
The following day a second experiment was done. The subject described a letter “with an acute angle...as though there is a trench... like a whole stack of V’s." She drew a pile of overlapping V's. Again, on a blind basis, Puthoff had no difficulty in correctly identifying the target letter as a “V”.
“These experiments strongly suggest that the way to increase the resolution capability is to arrange to separate the perception from the analysis, to encourage the subject to simply describe his or her perceptions, followed up by having a different person do the final analysis. Similar results have recently been obtained with subject H1.”
This speaks to the Rver in us – our gut sense. But we need spreadsheets too – we need solid data.

Nash, Carroll. [TERMINAL SALIENCE], Journal 49, 1977, pp. 563-4. Speculates on the reasons for ‘terminal salience’, the occurrence of higher scores at both ends of an ESP experiment.
Nash, Carroll B. CLAIRVOYANT DETERMINATION OF THE MOST FREQUENT OF FIVE CARDS, Journal 53, 1985, pp. 26-30.
Author’s abstract: Three experimenters each performed a test of clairvoyance with 20 subjects for a total of 60 different subjects. Each subject attempted to call the most frequent card (MFC) in each of 100 sets of five cards, the sets being removed successively from the top of a randomly arranged, open, ESP deck. While the combined results of the three experiments were significant, the deviation was independently significant only in the results of one of them. Analysis of her results indicates that the ESP of the five cards was diametric and that the success in identifying the MFC carried directly with the difference between its frequency and the frequency of the next MFC in the set. The cards in the MFC hits had a higher proportional frequency of the next MFC in the set.
The cards in the MFC hits had a higher proportional frequency in the two terminal positions of the five-card set than in the inner three. The results are interpreted to indicate that the ESP process took place by an act of diametric paranormal perception of the five cards, followed by normal psychophysiological determination of which of the cards was the most frequent.
Salience of letters in a word/name
The first three and last letter proved to the most effective letters in designing the basic rule of an effective typing abbreviation system. There are other rules for prefixes, two-word phrases, & longer phrases.� http://jonknowles.net/

Scoring methods for AB1
Method 1. Percent of matches of first and last letter with target names counting each instance of a first or last letter in the viewer’s session
Method 2: Percent of matches of first and last letter with target names counting only one instance of a first or last letter in the viewer’s session
Method 3a: Ratio of number of letters in each target name compared to number of letters in names in viewer’s session
Method 3B: Ratio of number of syllables in each target name compared to number of syllables in names in viewer’s session
Method 4: Exact match of name in target and in viewer’s session
Example of Scoring Method 1
How many times an initial or terminal letter occurs in the data and how many of those match the target. For example, if your data is: Peter, P…r, Shelling, M…n.
The score would be initial letter: P2, S1, M1. Last letter: r2, g1, n1.

Suggestion: The number of letters and the number of syllables could be used along with terminal salience to compile a “profile” of the name and perhaps identify it.
This should be tested with real world cases.
Possible uses of terminal salience:
Terminal salience is more likely to be useful when you know some alternatives and suspect the target is among them.
1. Persons: You have names of multiple suspects in a crime. TS helps identify the criminal. Similarly, combined with RV descriptors, TS could help identify a specific person out of a known set/group of them.
2. Places: You know the objective relates to one of several streets, cities, states, counties, countries, etc.
3. Tangibles: License plates, billboards, signs. Structural failures.
4. Intangibles: Passwords, phone numbers, codes, formulas, equations.

Henni's analysis of AB2, Location 3:
Debra and Elisa both got capital W, Debra had d (which is part of Warder) and the word „Word”, Elisa noted n after the W, which in shape is similar to r. Lily also had letters w and r in her visuals, although not paired as parts of the same street name. No one had Q, Debra and Elisa had C, Lily had K (those can be phonetic matches to Q but that is a far stretch maybe). Elisa had an n after C, which is present in Quincy. Lily had data indicating y as one of the last letters. �
Comment by Jon: The intended intersection received the fewest letter matches so the analyst would not have been able to discover the target from this data. I doubt this is a case of "psi-missing".

Observations on Experiment AB2
In Locations #1,2 and 5, the percentages of matches are low and it would be difficult to select initial or last letters of street names based on those percentages.
In the two locations (#3 and #4) which were analyzed along with “decoys”, the match percentages did not provide a basis for the analyst to be able to select the intended location.
Further experimentation might however show that "terminal salience" is a useful approach. This is a new approach in RVland and it might take time to develop skill with it.
